Where does Como get the money to spend so lavishly?

In just six months, Serie A newcomers Como 1907 have spent over 100 million euros on transfers.

Cesc Fabregas's Como has been making some big spending moves recently.

But this is not simply the impulsiveness of a nouveau riche. Behind it lies a meticulously planned project, with solid financial resources, modern management thinking, and influential names from the football elite.

Como - The breakthrough of an outsider

Less than six years ago, Como was still an obscure name drifting in Serie D, the fourth tier of Italian football. Today, they are the third-highest spending team in Serie A, surpassing Milan, Inter, Roma, and Napoli.

In just six months, over 100 million euros were thrown into the transfer market – an unbelievable figure for a newly promoted club. But even more remarkable is how Como did it: systematically, strategically, and... without borrowing money.

Cesc Fabregas, a former part of the legendary tiki-taka style, is now the mastermind behind the Como project. Joining the club as coach in mid-2024, Fabregas has been a shareholder for two years already.

Under his leadership, Como not only avoided relegation in his first season but also finished in the top 10 of Serie A – a quiet feat. But the story here is not just about tactics or football, but about a whole new model of football investment.

Let's start with money. Like every modern miracle, Como also had its "fairy godmother": the Indonesian billionaire brothers, Robert Budi and Michael Hartono – the tycoons of the Djarum Group, a diversified conglomerate involved in banking, real estate, tobacco, and technology. They acquired Como for a mere €200,000 in 2019, when the club was on the verge of collapse.

Fabregas helped Como soar in the 2024/25 season.

Now, the owners of Como invest tens of millions of euros each season, without borrowing or financial constraints. According to Forbes , each of them has a net worth exceeding $25 billion – richer than most club owners in Europe.

In the summer of 2025 alone, Como spent €53.5 million to bring in promising players: Jesus Rodriguez (€22.5 million), Baturina (€18 million), Álex Valle, Van der Brempt, and Fellipe Jack. Prior to that, the winter transfer window also saw equally high-quality signings such as Caqueret, Douvikas, and Assane Diao. In total, over €100 million was spent in just half a year – while revenue from player sales only reached €4.4 million.

Is Como being reckless with that kind of spending? Absolutely not. They even incurred an operating loss of €47 million last season, but still reported a net profit of €3.3 million – a shrewd financial calculation thanks to infrastructure investments and asset valuations.

The club is renovating the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium and building a modern training center. This is a long-term investment, rather than the typical "buying stars for publicity" approach often seen in clubs lacking vision.

Como's vision

Interestingly, the team behind Como isn't just made up of billionaires. Fabregas, as coach, is also supported by Thierry Henry and Dennis Wise in management roles – individuals who understand top-level football but are also unafraid to venture into new models of sports management.

This is what makes Como special: he doesn't try to rush the process, but instead persistently builds a modern football ecosystem, from the training academy to the administrative offices.

Fabregas is writing a fairy tale with Como.

And Como shows no signs of stopping. Alvaro Morata is almost certain to arrive for 8-10 million euros. Jayden Addai from AZ Alkmaar is also on their radar, along with another international-level left-footed center-back. This means their squad is still being finalized, with each piece carefully selected.

From a beautiful but unknown team from the lake region, Como now embodies a modern model of football: big money, but spent wisely; not chasing fame, but aiming for sustainability. And while fans are still discussing the future of Juventus, Inter, or Milan, perhaps they should start looking towards North Lombardy – where an "outsider" project is quietly building something truly great.

Italian football has always needed fresh perspectives. And Como 1907, with both boldness and shrewdness, is creating a special chapter in the old book of Serie A.
