A recent report from 404 Media says that Graykey now has access to Apple's latest iPhone 16 models. Specifically, the tool can access "partial" information from devices running iOS 18 or iOS 18.0.1, including the iPhone 16 series.
Graykey can bypass iOS 18 security wall
However, the exact meaning of “partial” remains unclear. The leaked documents also show that Graykey cannot access iPhones running the iOS 18.1 beta, and it is likely that this restriction also applies to the official version of iOS 18.1 that Apple released in late October.
Graykey is just one of two iPhone unlocking tools
Like its fellow unlocking product Cellebrite, Magnet Forensics, the company behind Graykey, is tight-lipped about how it works. What we do know, however, is that these companies are constantly looking for new vulnerabilities in iPhones to do their job. Since iOS 12 in 2018, Apple has been steadily patching security holes to prevent unauthorized unlocking.
404 Media also points out that Magnet Forensics may be able to find a way to unlock iOS 18, iOS 18.1, and later versions. Currently, developers are testing iOS 18.2, which Apple is expected to release in December.
It's worth noting that products like Graykey and Cellebrite require direct access to the device to work, which means hacking methods to access the iPhone 16 through them are not common scenarios and cannot be performed remotely.
User security and privacy have always been a core tenet of Apple. The company has consistently rejected requests from several governments to create “backdoors” to access data. For those concerned about unauthorized access to their phones, installing the latest software update is a must. For iPhone users, it is recommended to update to iOS 18.1.1, and for iPad, the update is iPadOS 18.1.1.
