Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Branch 3, said that plum, also known as northern plum, is a fruit tree grown in many mountainous areas in the North of our country. The flowering season is from December to January, the fruit ripens in May to July.
According to traditional medicine, parts of the plum tree such as fruit, roots, root bark, resin, leaves, and seeds all have medicinal properties.
Plums are sweet and sour, have a neutral nature, and have the effect of clearing the liver and regulating heat, generating body fluids, and promoting urination. They are often used to treat diseases such as tuberculosis, yin deficiency, internal heat, edema, and diabetes.
Plum roots are usually harvested in September and October. They are bitter and cold, and have the effect of clearing heat and detoxifying.
Plum leaves are sour and neutral, and are used to treat wounds caused by trauma. Plum seeds are also called li hach nhan, which are sweet and bitter in taste and neutral in nature. They have the effect of dispersing blood stasis, promoting urination, and laxative properties.

Some remedies from plums according to folk experience
Insect bites : Wash plum seeds, crush them and apply to the wound for 5 minutes, then wash clean, apply twice a day.
Relieve toothache: 30g plum root, boil with 100ml water, gargle for 5-7 minutes in the morning, afternoon, and evening before going to bed, gargle for 5 days.
Laxative effect: 10g plum seed, 10g peach seed, 10g almond, put all in a pot, pour 700ml, boil down to 250ml, divide into 2 doses to drink during the day, use continuously for 10 days.
Cure bone and joint pain when the weather changes: 50g plum leaves, 30g each of purple jasmine leaves, peach leaves, si leaves, and hibiscus leaves. Wash all, crush, roast until golden brown, soak in alcohol for 10-15 days, use this alcohol to massage the painful area twice a day.
Facial beauty: 250g fresh plum, wash, remove seeds, crush, squeeze to get juice and mix with 250ml rice wine, store in a sealed jar for gradual use, drink 2 times a day, 10 - 20ml each time. In case of dark face, finely ground plum seed powder mixed with egg white, apply 1 - 2 times a day for 5 - 7 days.
Treating high fever, convulsions in children, reducing cough, treating wounds: 8-12g dried plum leaves (ly thu diep), decoct to drink, use externally to boil to get water, remove residue and bathe children or crush to get fresh plum leaf juice to soak in swollen and painful areas.
Use to clear heat and detoxify, used in cases of painful urination, frequent urination due to damp heat, bloody dysentery, diabetes, fever in children, boils: Plum root (ly can) 8-12g, decoct to drink. For external use, roast to preserve the properties, grind into powder, apply or sprinkle on the painful area.
Clears heat, relieves depression, cures diabetes, anxiety, cases of vaginal discharge, toothache, ulcers: plum root bark (ly can bi) 8-12g, decoct to drink, can be boiled to concentrate and swallowed or soaked in water and applied to the external area of the ulcer.
According to Dr. Vu, plums are rich in nutrients and have medicinal properties, but people with weak spleen and stomach, loose stools, kidney failure, spermatorrhea, and pregnant women should not use them.
Note: Plums have many health benefits, however people should consult a doctor before using them as medicine to avoid harming their health.
