Le Van Thinh Hospital achieves platinum standard in stroke treatment

The World Stroke Organization's platinum certification requires medical facilities to meet strict criteria for emergency care, diagnosis, intervention and rehabilitation for stroke patients.

On October 2, Le Van Thinh Hospital (HCMC) received the platinum certification from the World Stroke Association and hosted the Scientific Conference of the 8th Hospital Competition.

According to Dr. Tran Van Khanh, Director of Le Van Thinh Hospital, the platinum certification requires medical facilities to meet the strict criteria of the World Stroke Association on emergency capacity, diagnosis, intervention, comprehensive care and rehabilitation for stroke patients.

As of early 2025, Le Van Thinh Hospital has received gold certification from the World Stroke Association for 8 quarters. The World Stroke Association's award evaluation process is reviewed by a national accreditation agency and 2 international accreditation agencies.

However, these certificates are not valid forever but are evaluated quarterly, and only when they pass a series of strict criteria will they be re-issued.

"In the context of increasing number of stroke cases, platinum certification is not only an international recognition but also demonstrates the people's strong trust in the hospital," Dr. Tran Van Khanh shared.

Every year, Le Van Thinh Hospital receives about 600 stroke patients, with more than 100 cases undergoing thrombolysis. The hospital's stroke and cerebrovascular disease clinic is managing nearly 1,000 post-stroke patients.

According to the World Health Organization, each year, the world records about 12.2 million new stroke cases, equivalent to one person having a stroke every 3 seconds. About 71% of patients lose the ability to work after a stroke, and the cost of stroke treatment and care accounts for about 1.12% of the total global GDP.

In Vietnam, more than 200,000 stroke cases are recorded each year, more than 76% of which are cerebral infarctions. The new incidence rate is estimated at 222 cases/100,000 people/year; the current incidence rate is up to 1,541 cases/100,000 people, among the highest in Southeast Asia.
