Harmony on Vietnamese screen

Vietnamese cinema is witnessing an interesting exchange as more and more Northern actors are participating in Southern film projects and vice versa. This trend reflects a positive movement of the market, as regional boundaries are gradually narrowing, giving way to diversity and the desire of filmmakers to expand their audience.

In The Search for Ambergris and The Haunted House, Doan Quoc Dam and Hoang Kim Ngoc are two northern actors who play the main roles. Both scored points for their natural acting and good chemistry with their co-stars.

This trend is continuing to develop, when right after The Ghost House, Hoang Kim Ngoc participated in the project Human Trafficking Camp. Or in 2025, Thanh Huong, a familiar actress in Northern TV dramas, participated in 2 movies in the Southern market including: Finding the body: Headless Ghost (released in April) and Blood Paradise (expected to be released on December 31). Actor Thanh Son, after 2 roles in Love by mistake with a best friend and Death Battle in the sky, also participated in the project Love Poem to a Nun.

Even many veteran actors from the North such as: People's Artist Ngoc Thu, Meritorious Artists Chieu Xuan, Phu Don, Quang Thang, Kim Oanh... were also chosen by many Southern filmmakers for important roles. On the contrary, many Southern actors such as: Quoc Truong, Lan Phuong, Kha Ngan, Xuan Nghi, Thuy Diem... also achieved much success when participating in Northern TV series.

Actress Hoang Kim Ngoc shared that when she participated in Nha Ma Xo, she was worried that her Northern accent would make her dialogue "out of tune" among the cast speaking in the Southern dialect. But the openness and friendliness of the film crew helped her quickly integrate. In fact, the story of regional accents used to be a controversial topic, typically with Tet in Hell Village and The Last Wife.

However, over time, with the progress in actors' acting and the increasingly improved quality of films, audiences forgot this gap.

It is undeniable that choosing actors with different voices is also a way to expand the market, helping the film conquer more viewers. However, no filmmaker would take the risk if that placement does not come from the requirements of the script, the character and the harmony of the entire cast.

And finally, what matters is not the regional accent but the ability to fully immerse yourself in the role to convince the audience, making them believe in the director's choice. That is the real common cinematic language.
