Building on previous findings, a team from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) conducted a meta-analysis of the effects of omega-3 supplementation on aggressive behavior. In total, they looked at 29 trials, including 3,918 participants.
These trials were conducted between 1996 and 2024, lasting an average of 16 weeks.
Consuming omega-3 fish oil reduces aggressive behavior by 28%
The results found that consuming omega-3 fish oil reduced aggressive behavior by up to 28%. Notably, the results showed that both types of aggressive behavior: reactive (which occurs when provoked) and proactive (pre-planned behavior) were reduced.
Professor Adrian Raine, from the University of Pennsylvania, and researchers suggest that omega-3s may help regulate behavior by reducing inflammation and maintaining important neurological processes.
In addition, many other studies have shown that omega-3 from fish oil helps reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious cardiovascular diseases. This shows the many benefits of this fatty acid, according to Science Alert.
