Patient Duong Thi L. (60 years old, Tay ethnic, Lang Son ) was admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases with symptoms of scaly skin, itchy rash all over the body, mild fever, cracked extremities, discharge and swollen legs.

Previously, due to persistent itching, the patient self-treated at home by taking unknown medication for 10 days. The intense itching made her imagine worms crawling on her skin, so she arbitrarily applied tobacco and herbal medicine directly to the affected skin area. The condition not only did not improve but also worsened.

Upon admission, the patient had red, cracked, scaly skin, fever, and severe itching.

Doctor Phan Thi Thanh Hoa, who directly treated the patient, said that the patient was screened for parasitic diseases such as strongyloidiasis, trichinosis, large/small liver flukes, tapeworms, etc. The results showed that the patient had an unknown drug allergy on the background of atopic dermatitis.

After 5 days of combined treatment between the two departments of Allergy - Immunology and Dermatology, the patient's condition improved significantly: no more fever, less swelling and redness, no more itching, no more flaking skin.

The patient is being treated in hospital.

Dr. Hoa shared that allergies can be caused by many allergens, including parasites. The symptoms of drug allergies are easily confused with atopic dermatitis.

From the case of patient L., Doctor Hoa recommends:

Do not use medicine or apply leaves, herbal medicines, chemicals... on the skin when damage appears.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease but can be completely controlled if treatment and re-examination by the right specialist are followed.

People with symptoms such as severe itching, red rash, peeling, cracking or oozing skin should see a doctor early for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Self-treatment at home can spread the damage, cause infection, worsen allergies, and prolong healing time.
