At approximately 11:15 PM on May 25th, the Emergency Department of Vietnam-Cuba Dong Hoi Hospital received patient TTH (born in 1952, residing in Dong Hoi ward, Quang Tri province). The patient reported experiencing difficulty swallowing and a burning sensation in the throat after dinner, leading to repeated attempts to remove the object from the throat. The pain worsened, prompting the patient to seek medical attention. An endoscopy of the throat was performed, but no foreign object was detected. The patient was then transferred to the Gastroenterology Department for monitoring and treatment.

Doctors from various specialties including Otolaryngology, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Anesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, and Gastroenterology conducted a consultation to assist in managing the patient's critical condition.
"Upon admission, the patient had increased phlegm and mucus secretion, and neck pain. Because the patient had just eaten, an endoscopic examination to locate the foreign object was not possible, so they were given intravenous fluids, painkillers, and antibiotics," said Dr. Nguyen Duy Thach, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Clinical Hematology, Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital.
On the morning of May 26th, a gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a foreign object – a long bone fragment – piercing the patient's esophageal wall. The Gastroenterology Department, along with five other specialties from the hospital, held a consultation to determine the treatment plan.
"This is a dangerous emergency situation. Acute complications can lead to mediastinal pneumothorax, shortness of breath, and respiratory failure. Long-term complications can cause abscesses. If not treated appropriately and promptly, it can be life-threatening," Dr. Thach added.

The foreign object removed was a long, sharp piece of bone.
The gastroenterologist performed an endoscopic procedure to remove the foreign object and close the wound to prevent complications.
The patient's health is currently stable, and they continue to be monitored and treated.
