Heat of 46 degrees Celsius in summer, cold of minus 50 degrees Celsius in winter, no rain for 500 years... are what people in some harsh areas of the world have to endure.

Oymyakon is the coldest village in the world, located in the Oymyakonsk district of Russia. This is the "permanently" coldest settlement on Earth, according to BBC Science Focus. The 500 people here are used to houses covered in ice and snow. The average winter temperature in Oymyakon is around minus 50 degrees Celsius. Residents here only have 3 hours of daylight during the winter months. In the town square, a monument displays the lowest temperature ever recorded, which was around minus 71.2 degrees Celsius in 1924. Although cold in winter, summer temperatures in Oymyakon are around 34 degrees Celsius. The people of Oymyakon survive by eating raw fish. Ice fishing is one of the main livelihoods in the locality. Arica (Chile) , located near the Atacama Desert, is the driest city in the world. The average rainfall is only about 0.761 mm per year. The Atacama Desert has not had rain for 500 years. Despite this harshness, the city's population has increased to 220,000 people. The reason given by BBC Science Focus to explain this paradox lies in the special nature and location of the city. Accordingly, Arica is a port city, located next to the Pan-American Highway (the longest highway in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records). In addition, the prosperous fruit industry located in the nearby Azapa and Lluta valleys also contributes to attracting people to live and work. In the picture is the masterpiece Mano del Desierto (hand of the desert) inaugurated in 1992, 11 m high. This giant hand rising from the desert was sculpted by Mario Irarrazabal. This is a must-visit "check-in" spot on the journey to conquer the driest place in the world. Photo: Kamran On Bike.

Araouane (Mali, West Africa) is a small village in the Sahara Desert. Araouane may be the hottest inhabited place on Earth, according to BBC Science Focus. Its 300 residents endure 46C summer temperatures, barren desert conditions and sandstorms called harmattan. But they accept it because Araouane is an important transport route to the salt mining center of Taoudenni. Photo: @gencyolcu, @EnricRibera.

La Oroya (Peru) is the most polluted city on the planet, as confirmed by the Blacksmith Institute (New York, USA) in 2007. The air contains "dangerously" high levels of arsenic, lead and sulfur dioxide, and acid rain destroys vegetation in nearby areas. BBC Science Focus said that life for the 25,000 residents of La Oroya is truly "terrible". The city in central Peru is in this situation because it is located near the mining and smelting of metals such as gold, silver, bismuth and cadmium... Photo: Giuliano Koren.

Vanuatu (South Pacific ) has active volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis that strike every day. These phenomena make Vanuatu the riskiest place to live, according to the United Nations World Risk Index. The island's sea level has risen by about 6mm a year since 1993; average temperatures will rise by 1C by 2030, according to satellite data reported by BBC Science Focus. In 2020, the island was hit by Tropical Cyclone Harold (the worst in five years), with winds of up to 250km/h. Photo: formasup.

Tristan de Cunha is a group of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean, the most isolated inhabited place on the planet. The population of the island is around 246 people. With an area of about 98 square kilometers, Tristan de Cunha has no land mass large enough to land an airplane. Boats are the only means of transportation if visitors want to get here. However, the travel time is quite long, about 6 days, departing from South Africa. Photo: Lonely Planet.

Mawsynram (Northeast India) records more than 11,880 mm of rainfall per year. This is dozens of times more than other wet urban areas due to heavy rainfall. Specifically, the thickness of the layer of rain that falls on Mawsynram is 11 times that of Glasgow (Scotland) and 22 times that of London. Although the Guinness Book of Records recognizes Mawsynram as the place with the highest average rainfall, the nearby town of Cherrapunji still holds the record for the most rainfall in a month and in a year.
