After 36 years of sticking to the Hoang Sa sea, fisherman Nguyen Ngoc Canh is considered a "unicorn" of the fishing village; an example of good production and labor, actively participating in protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
In Tan My residential group, Quang Phuc ward, Ba Don town, Quang Binh province, everyone knows Captain Nguyen Ngoc Canh (born in 1975). It is not easy to meet him, you have to choose the middle of the moon, when the boat is not at sea. Because in the life of a fisherman, the boat is his home, the sea is his homeland, so he rarely has time to be near his wife and children.
Sea "fortune" hunter
As the eldest son in a family with a tradition of going to sea, Mr. Canh set sail at the age of 13. In 2004, at the age of 29, Mr. Canh boldly borrowed more than 500 million VND, saved up capital to build a large capacity ship (420 CV) to go out to sea and stick to the sea. In 2010, he built another fishing boat with a capacity of 430 CV worth 1.9 billion VND.
In particular, in 2016, according to Decree No. 67/2014/ND-CP of the Government supporting fishermen in building ships, Mr. Canh's family decided to build another fishing boat worth nearly 17 billion VND, with a capacity of 829 CV. Mr. Canh invested in modern and synchronous equipment for all 3 of these boats such as: long-range communication devices, fish finders, MOVIMAR positioning devices... to serve fishing, casting, seining...

Mr. Canh said that thanks to favorable weather, applying technology and many years of experience at sea, he has had big wins in recent years. In the first 6 months of 2023 alone, each trip out to sea, his 3 fishing boats caught 40-50 tons of mackerel, tuna... with a value of 1.7 to 1.9 billion VND.
With the "fishing boat 67" (built according to Decree 67/2014/ND-CP), Mr. Canh has recruited more fishermen to go to sea to participate in the Hoang Sa sea for a longer period of time. Mr. Canh boasted that from 2020 to now, each year the 3 boats have caught over 120 tons of seafood, with a revenue of 9.7 billion VND, and a profit after deducting all expenses of about 4.7 billion VND/year. In addition, Mr. Canh also creates regular jobs for about 35 workers with an average income of 10-20 million VND/person/month.
Up to now, after 36 years of living in Hoang Sa, Mr. Canh has a large fortune that many people admire, all 4 of his children have been educated and become successful.
Help each other to make a living at sea
Realizing that the work of fishermen at sea is not only fishing, in 2014, Mr. Canh registered to participate and mobilized two ship owners to register to both exploit seafood and protect the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.
Also in 2014, when China illegally placed the Haiyang 981 drilling rig in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, Mr. Canh's boat was one of the first four fishing boats to appear in the Hoang Sa waters to combine fishing and protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands.
Mr. Canh said that time was an unforgettable memory in his career at sea. Despite facing danger and the aggression of Chinese ships, he and other fishing boats were determined to unite and steadfastly hold on to the country's sovereign waters.
Fishermen like Mr. Canh are called living milestones at sea, contributing to affirming national sovereignty. "After many years at sea, we know every meter of the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the country and always strictly comply with the provisions of the law, not fishing outside the permitted area. Participating in protecting sovereignty is the responsibility of each of us fishermen," said Mr. Canh.

In the locality, Mr. Canh is considered by many people as a role model for production and solidarity among fishermen. He actively participates in social and professional activities such as establishing solidarity groups and cooperative groups for fishing at sea... He has also been the Party cell secretary and head of the Front Work Committee of Tan My residential group for many years. Through the solidarity group, members of the group can fully grasp information on the provisions of Vietnamese law, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and regulations on offshore exploitation activities.
Mr. Canh is also called the "unicorn" of the fishing village by the locals, because almost every trip he makes is a big win. For example, in the 2023 trip, after more than 1 month of fishing in the Hoang Sa sea area, Mr. Canh's family's fishing boats docked at Tho Quang fishing port (Da Nang city), bringing back more than 70 tons of tuna and mackerel and selling them for nearly 2 billion VND.
With this "unicorn" of the fishing village, whenever a fishing boat has an accident at sea, he does not hesitate to help, whether they know each other or not. Mr. Canh's fishing boats have towed and rescued boats that were in trouble due to engine failure and were adrift at sea 11 times.
Every year, his family also helps 15 disadvantaged or poor families with materials, capital, and seafaring experience to develop production, reduce poverty, and get rich in their homeland.
"Being a fisherman always means facing countless dangers and hardships. Helping each other make a living at sea, together protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands that our ancestors have protected for generations is not just my wish and responsibility" - "unicorn" - captain Nguyen Ngoc Canh said.
Dare to think, dare to do
Fisherman Nguyen Ngoc Canh was awarded a certificate of merit by the Prime Minister in 2018. In 2021, he was awarded the Third Class Labor Medal by the President. He is also one of the 100 Outstanding Vietnamese Farmers in 2023 voted by the Vietnam Farmers' Association.
Mr. Tran Tien Sy, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Binh province, commented: "Fisherman Nguyen Ngoc Canh is an example of a member with the will to overcome difficulties, hard work, dare to think and dare to do; determined to stick to the sea not only to get rich from catching seafood, creating jobs for dozens of workers, but also actively contributing to protecting the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland. Fisherman Canh's example is worth praising and spreading."
