"From the first grade, I rented each Doraemon comic book to read until the day I collected the entire set. I felt like I had fulfilled my unfinished childhood dream" - that's what Tuan Anh (HCMC) shared when talking about his massive comic book collection.
Comic books with worn spines, faded covers, and faded colors become many times more valuable when they become a way for readers to connect with the past and find childhood memories.
On book buying and selling groups, old comic books can be sold for prices ranging from several million to tens of millions of dong.
In a group with over 100,000 members, it's easy to come across rare series published in the 1990s or limited editions that have been discontinued and are priced many times higher than their original price.
For example, a reseller sells the "Donald and Friends" series with 215/233 volumes for nearly 10 million VND, 9 volumes of "Adventure Class" for 1.8 million VND, Doraemon series first released in Vietnam (1992) for 500,000 VND or more depending on whether it is new or old...
Or the series "Hesman the Hero" after more than 20 years of publication still retains its appeal to readers. A series of 159 volumes has a price that increases every year, up to 50 million VND depending on the quality.
Sharing with Lao Dong, Tuan Anh said he is a 9X generation reader, who has been passionate about reading comic books about robotic cats since childhood, which at that time was still translated as "Doraemon". Only when he grew up did Tuan Anh have the opportunity to find and collect his favorite comic books from his childhood.
Currently, Tuan Anh owns the entire "Doraemon" series first published in Vietnam in 1992, including 77 short stories, 8 novellas, and 4 color series.
"There are volumes I bought in 2011, the stories were not rare and the price was still quite cheap. But in recent years, I had to spend several million to buy one volume. I spent about 30 million VND to collect the entire set of 1992 editions," Tuan Anh revealed.
In addition, he completed the "Dragon Ball" series released in 1995 in Vietnam, which has 67 volumes. To get the most satisfactory series, Tuan Anh bought nearly 10 sets to filter out the volumes in good condition and with beautiful covers.
Tuan Anh's comic book collection of nearly 100 comic books cost hundreds of millions of dong to collect and compile all the volumes.
With "national" series that are still regularly reprinted such as "Crayon Shin-chan", "Sailor Moon", "Dragon Ball", fans hunt for the first editions from decades ago, accepting to buy used books.
The hunt for old comics doesn’t stop when readers have all the books. When they find a better quality comic, they continue to buy it at a higher price, take the best ones, and then resell the old ones to others.
Vu Van Anh (25 years old, Hanoi ) shared that the price of old comic books depends not only on their rarity, but also on their condition of preservation. A book that is intact, not torn or yellowed can be worth many times more than a book of the same type but damaged.
“There’s a special feeling when you hold an old comic book in your hand. The smell of old paper, the feel of faded pages, and the thought that this book has gone through so many years – all create an experience that cannot be had with digital or unopened publications,” said Van Anh.
