Mr Christie, 60, was an adviser to former US President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign but has become Mr Trump's most vocal critic in 2020.

A former federal prosecutor, Mr. Christie presented himself as the only Republican candidate willing to take on Mr. Trump directly. In a post on his social media page, Mr. Trump mentioned Mr. Christie's weight and called him a "failed governor."
Mr Christie has not fared well in recent polls. He had just 1% support among likely Republican primary voters in a Reuters/Ipsos poll in May, compared with 49% for Mr Trump and 19% for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Other Republicans who have announced their candidacies include former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley and US Senator Tim Scott. Former Vice President Mike Pence has also made an official announcement.
As governor of New Jersey, Mr. Christie was seen as a rising political star whose willingness to take on opponents head-on earned him rave reviews.
