As one of the localities effectively implementing crop restructuring, in the 2023-2024 winter-spring season, Phuoc Trung commune converted over 50 hectares of low-yield rice land and hilly land to cultivate glutinous corn, hybrid corn, sesame, peanuts, watermelons, etc. Currently, the farmers' crops are growing and developing well thanks to irrigation water from Phuoc Trung Lake, Phuoc Nhon Lake, and the TN9, TN11, and TN13 canals of the Tan My irrigation system. Mr. Chamaléa Phắng's family in Dong Day village converted 7 sao (approximately 0.7 hectares) of rice land to glutinous corn. The corn plants are now nearly two months old and are in the tasseling and young ear stage. Mr. Phắng shared: "This season, thanks to favorable weather, the corn plants are growing evenly, developing well, and have few pests and diseases. My family is focusing on watering and fertilizing during the fruiting stage to help the ears grow larger and achieve high yields." Sharing the joy with Mr. Phang, the 1.1-hectare sticky corn field of Mr. Katơr Tân's family in Đồng Dày village is also thriving, promising a bountiful harvest. Mr. Tân said: "Previously, this land could only produce one crop during the rainy season with unstable yields, and was left fallow during the dry season. After being encouraged by the commune to switch crops, I decided to improve the land, dig a pond to store water, and invest over 50 million VND in pipelines and pumps to switch to growing local sticky corn. This successful crop conversion has helped my family's economy grow steadily. Over three corn harvests, my family has earned a profit of over 80 million VND."
Mr. Katơr Tân in Đồng Dày village, Phước Trung commune, converted 1.1 hectares of hilly land with unreliable water sources to growing glutinous corn during the winter-spring season.
For the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop season, Bac Ai district planted 1,800 hectares of various crops; including 760 hectares of rice and 1,040 hectares of other crops. For hilly and mountainous areas without reliable irrigation, the district directed local authorities in Phuoc Thanh, Phuoc Thang, Phuoc Hoa, etc., to encourage farmers to switch to drought-resistant crops on over 121 hectares, such as corn, cassava, beans, sesame, watermelon, and chili peppers. Thanks to favorable weather conditions, the crops in these converted areas have developed well, promising high yields and showing many positive signs. This is also the direction that farmers in many localities are choosing for production in the upcoming summer-autumn season.
Ms. Ngo Thi Cuc, Deputy Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Bac Ai District, said: "In practice, the restructuring of crop patterns in the communes over the past period has shown that crops with higher economic value are 2-4 times more valuable than rice cultivation. In the coming time, the district will continue to promote propaganda and mobilization through various forms to raise farmers' awareness of crop conversion. At the same time, we will guide people to apply intercropping and crop rotation methods, create commodity production areas, gradually diversify crops, and help people increase their income and develop their family economy."
