Developing green, sustainable agriculture

In recent times, Dong Nai’s agricultural sector has focused on transforming production and cultivation models towards ecological, resource-saving, productivity-enhancing and agricultural value-enhancing approaches while protecting the environment, reducing costs and risks for farmers. Many businesses, cooperatives and farmers have implemented solutions and initiatives to promote green production in both crop and livestock farming.

However, to form an ecosystem for green agriculture development and responsible agriculture towards a sustainable future, there needs to be stronger support mechanisms and policies that act as a pedestal.

Clean production at low cost

After the merger, Dong Nai province has many advantages in developing agricultural production in both the fields of cultivation and livestock. It is valuable that cooperatives and farmers in the province have soon paid attention to implementing circular agricultural models for safe production at low cost. Many good and creative models are willing to be shared by farmers for replication in practice.

From a single cricket farming model, up to now, Loc Hung commune has formed a cricket farming area in a chain from farming to processing and exporting with the participation of dozens of farming households. In particular, Cricket One Company Limited invested in a factory processing cricket products right in the farming area, purchasing farmers' products at good prices, ensuring sustainable output for farmers. The enterprise's processed products are being exported to many countries around the world. This model is encouraged by local authorities to be replicated not only because it brings high economic efficiency but also because it is a circular economic model, contributing to the development of green agricultural production.

The rocky land in Dau Giay commune often has many boulders on the ground and mixed in the soil. Therefore, many years ago, in this land, farmers mainly planted annual crops, or cashew trees, which had low economic efficiency. These difficulties have become the motivation for farmers to have many initiatives in land improvement and in the cultivation process.

The specialized avocado growing area of dozens of hectares in this land is highly effective economically because it not only gives good yield but also has good quality. Achieving the above results is thanks to the fact that very early on, local avocado farmers had many creative solutions to produce according to VietGAP standards and convert to organic direction at low cost.

Mr. Pham Duy Long, Head of Bau Ham 2 Avocado Cooperative - Quang Trung (Dau Giay Commune) said: For many years, local avocado farmers have been practicing production according to VietGAP process, prioritizing the use of organic fertilizers and biological pesticides. In particular, gardeners have many good solutions in soil improvement, especially self-composting organic fertilizers to fertilize crops at low cost. They take advantage of discarded bananas after export or agricultural by-products to self-compost organic fertilizers, grow grass in the garden to both use as feed for cows and help improve the soil to become more and more loose and fertile.

"Policy boost"

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has just issued an Action Plan to implement the Project on Emission Reduction in the Crop Production Sector for the period 2025-2035, with a vision to 2050. One of the key contents of this project is to focus on groups of solutions to develop green agriculture associated with emission reduction. The project focuses on key groups of solutions including: converting crop structures suitable for ecological regions, applying low-emission technical packages, building production models according to value chains, connecting markets for low-emission products, transferring technology, etc. Thereby, gradually forming a modern, ecological agriculture that is resilient to the impacts of climate change.

Regarding the implementation of the Project on Emission Reduction in the Crop Production Sector for the period 2025-2035, with a vision to 2050, Mr. Le Quoc Doanh, Chairman of the Vietnam Horticulture Association, said: The project should focus on key crop groups, which will both create a large impact and facilitate replication. In particular, pilot models must be designed so that once completed, production can be converted on a large scale. The goal by 2050 is for 100% of Vietnam's key crops to apply emission reduction measures.

Dong Nai's agricultural sector is very interested in developing circular agriculture. Circular agricultural models are constantly being replicated. In particular, the province is very interested in implementing policies and programs to encourage the development of circular agriculture.

Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture and Environment NGUYEN VAN THANG

Dr. Le Van Tri, Chairman of the Vietnam Biofertilizer Association, said: The Association is implementing biofertilizer solutions for rubber trees in many factories. With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Vietnam Biofertilizer Association is promoting the production of biological products from organic by-products.
