According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, Vietnamese value-added pangasius products are increasingly gaining attention in international markets as consumers in these countries increasingly favor them, due to the diversity in processing into many rich dishes, mixed with many ingredients.

In May 2024, exports of value-added pangasius products reached more than 2 million USD. By the end of May 2024, exports of these products reached more than 13 million USD, an increase of 22% over the same period in 2023.

The top 5 destinations for Vietnam's value-added pangasius in the first 5 months of this year include: Singapore with 3 million USD, accounting for 23% of the proportion; Thailand with 2.6 million USD, accounting for 20% of the proportion; Japan with 1.4 million USD, accounting for 10% of the proportion; Australia with 1.1 million USD, accounting for 9% of the proportion, and the US with 1 million USD, accounting for 8%. Currently, there are about more than 50 enterprises participating in exporting value-added pangasius to the markets.

Of which, the most popular product is fried breaded pangasius/frozen breaded pangasius fillet, accounting for 82% of the total export of value-added products to markets in the first 5 months of this year, with an export value of nearly 11 million USD, up 31% over the same period last year.

In addition, frozen fried catfish skin snacks/fried basa fish cakes are also popular with consumers in the markets. Exports of this product reached nearly 400,000 USD in May 2024 and nearly 2 million USD in the first 5 months of this year.

Exports of some other value-added pangasius products such as frozen fried pangasius pieces, frozen basa fish balls with vegetables, etc. also recorded an increase in export value in the first 5 months of this year, respectively nearly 300,000 USD, up 52% ​​and 113,000 USD, up 33% over the same period last year.

According to VASEP experts, at the end of April 2024, nearly 40 Vietnamese enterprises, including pangasius exporting enterprises, introduced a series of processed products to foreign partners through the Global Seafood Exhibition 2024 in Spain. The instant products attracted many visitors to enjoy right at the booths. The processed products are very rich, mixed with many ingredients that are highly appreciated by customers.

Frozen pangasius fillets are still the main export product of Vietnamese pangasius. In May 2024, exports of this product to markets reached 134 million USD, up 2% over the same period last year. By the end of May, Vietnam exported nearly 603 million USD worth of frozen pangasius fillets to markets.

Regarding consumption markets, China and Hong Kong are still the largest consumers of Vietnamese pangasius. Cumulative pangasius exports to this market in the first 5 months of this year reached nearly 203 million USD, down 13% over the same period.

Pangasius exports to the US witnessed negative growth in May 2024. Cumulative pangasius exports to the US in the first 5 months of this year reached more than 132 million USD, up 12% over the same period in 2023.

Pangasius exports to the CPTPP market continued to grow in May 2024 with a value of nearly 13 million USD, up 17% over the same period. In particular, several markets recorded increased pangasius imports including Mexico, Japan, Canada, Singapore, etc. By the end of May 2024, pangasius exports to the CPTPP reached 103 million USD, up 9% over the same period.

Similar to the US market, pangasius exports to the EU market witnessed a 16% decrease in May 2024 with a value of 14 million USD. Cumulative exports in the first 5 months of the year to this market reached 70 million USD, down 9% compared to the same period last year.

According to experts from VASEP, the US and EU’s continued tightening of seafood imports from Russia continues to open up great opportunities for Vietnamese pangasius. Meanwhile, demand for pangasius in China is expected to improve as the country’s economic support policies “permeate”.
