OCOP product producers in the Mekong Delta are busy preparing for the Tet market, while maintaining the prices of some specialties as a way of showing appreciation to consumers at the end of the year.

These days, at OCOP (One Commune One Product) specialty stores in Rach Gia City, Kien Giang Province, consumers are bustling with activity, choosing items such as dried shrimp, dried fish, soursop tea, Phu Quoc fish sauce, ST25 rice, etc. OCOP products are also packaged into attractive gift baskets for giving during Tet (Lunar New Year).

Consumers trust

Mr. Tran Thanh, the owner of an OCOP (One Commune One Product) store in Kien Giang, said that most products are rated by customers as high-quality, safe, and elegantly packaged, yet reasonably priced and stable. His store offers many Tet gift packages ranging from 400,000 to 2 million VND, suitable for the needs of many customers.

To prepare high-quality rice for sale during Tet (Lunar New Year), Mr. Ngo Thanh Khuong, owner of a ST25 rice business in Kien Giang, has partnered with local people in An Bien district to cultivate approximately 2,000 hectares of rice on shrimp-rice farming land. “The rice market wasn't as expected during the Tet season. However, our ST25 rice, grown on shrimp-rice farming land, is mainly used as Tet gifts, so it sells quite quickly despite the price increasing by more than 5,000 VND compared to normal days. To date, we have sold about 80% of the 500 tons of rice we stocked for Tet,” he said.

According to Ms. Le Thi Kim Thoa, Chairwoman and Director of Hieu Phat Agricultural Service Cooperative (Phong Dong commune, Vinh Thuan district, Kien Giang province), during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake, the cooperative received orders for 500 gift baskets of "Beans - Fish - Pineapple" from customers inside and outside the province. Each gift basket includes whole dried shrimp, pickled onions, a box of beans, snakehead fish, dried chicken, and dried pineapple; priced at approximately 600,000 VND. "All products in this gift package meet OCOP standards of 3 stars or higher," she affirmed.

Mr. Do Tran Thinh, Chairman of the Kien Giang Provincial Farmers' Association, commented that using OCOP products in Tet gift baskets is a good approach. Not only are they elegant and suit customer tastes, but using OCOP products in Tet gift baskets also helps rural people develop their economy and stabilize their lives.

Ms. Truong Ngoc Giau, Director of Ngoc Giau Seafood Production and Trading Co., Ltd. (Ca Mau province), proudly shared that this Tet holiday, the company's OCOP (One Commune One Product) specialties were distributed to many provinces and cities as gifts, receiving high praise from customers. To gain consumer recognition and trust, in addition to focusing on product quality, the company invested over 100 million VND in packaging design and flexibly combined traditional sales methods with online sales through social media.

Ms. Giau stated: “Sales of our company's OCOP specialty products during Tet (Lunar New Year) have increased by 15% - 20% compared to normal days. Many of our products for the Tet market were sold out half a month ago. Due to many customers placing additional orders, the company is working at full capacity to meet demand.”

In Can Tho City, the "Specialties of My Homeland in the Mekong Delta" establishment, specializing in startup products and OCOP (One Commune One Product) specialties from the Mekong Delta, has been experiencing high demand in recent days. "Our products are very diverse, including dried snakehead fish, sausages, boneless catfish patties, banh tet (Vietnamese sticky rice cake), dried frog... During Tet (Vietnamese New Year), we mainly make gift baskets according to customer requests for gifting, priced from 500,000 VND to 2 million VND per basket. We expect the number of products sold during Tet to increase by more than 50% compared to normal days," confidently stated Mr. Truong Hoa Hoi, the owner of the establishment.

Quality has improved, but prices remain unchanged.

According to Mr. Van Huu Tai, a resident of Tan Hanh commune, Long Ho district, Vinh Long province, this Lunar New Year, many customers ordered spirulina powder in capsule form and other spirulina-related products produced by his facility for personal use or as gifts. This spirulina powder in capsule form has been certified as a 3-star OCOP product, containing many nutrients, and is therefore attracting increasing consumer interest.

“This year, with the economy gradually recovering, market demand is better than last year. However, I'm still keeping prices stable as usual, for example, seaweed powder is 370,000 VND/box of 12 tablets, fresh seaweed is 400,000 VND/500 gram bag, and dried seaweed bread is 45,000 VND/75 gram bag,” Mr. Tai informed.

Mr. Nguyen Tan Thuan, Director of the Can Tho City Urban Agricultural Services Cooperative, said that during this Tet holiday, the cooperative is supporting the sale of OCOP products from production facilities in the city and some provinces in the Mekong Delta. Many products made from cordyceps, various types of fish sauce, soursop tea, pheasant eggs, etc., are particularly popular.

Mr. Thuan observed: "As Tet approaches, the demand for goods increases. In particular, various types of fermented fish paste made from snakehead fish, catfish, and other fish species are in high demand. Notably, this year, OCOP (One Commune One Product) producers, despite improving product quality, have not raised prices to stimulate consumer demand."

Many OCOP (One Commune One Product) specialty stores in Ca Mau also affirmed that despite the fluctuating market prices during Tet (Lunar New Year), they maintained their selling prices as a token of gratitude to their customers at the end of the year. Mr. Nguyen Van Deo, the owner of a store in Ca Mau City, expressed: “We kept our prices the same as usual, so our profit was lower, but in return, we received a lot of support from our customers. This year, the amount of OCOP goods our store sold was more than last Tet.”

Aiming for sustainable profitability.

Mr. Le Van Su, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province, said that with raw materials entirely from nature and a standardized production process, the local OCOP products have given consumers peace of mind regarding quality.

“Ca Mau is committed to continuing to create favorable conditions for businesses and partners to access OCOP products and local specialties easily and conveniently. This aims to achieve sustainable profits in economic development,” Mr. Su emphasized.
