In 2024, Hanoi University plans to enroll 3,300 students, an increase of nearly 200 compared to last year, while discontinuing 5 high-quality programs.
On March 4th, Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Vice Rector of Hanoi University, stated that this move aims to implement the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training , abolishing the high-quality program based on the Ministry's criteria. Instead, the university will open six advanced programs in the fields of English Language, Korean Language, Italian Language, Chinese Language, Information Technology, and Tourism and Travel Service Management.
According to Mr. Dung, the school draws inspiration from the training programs of many prestigious universities around the world , designing them with a clear career orientation and increasing the amount of practical training and internships at domestic and international businesses. All advanced programs use 100% foreign languages in their specialized knowledge areas.
"In addition, the school has opened a new program and is enrolling 75 students in the Financial Technology major," Mr. Dung said.
The three admission methods remain stable as in previous years, including direct admission and priority admission as regulated by the Ministry of Education and Training; combined admission as regulated by Hanoi University; and admission based on the 2024 high school graduation exam scores.
Hanoi University uses 8 admission combinations, from D01 to D06 and DD2, with three subjects: Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Language. For the Foreign Language subject, candidates can use their scores in English, Russian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, or Chinese for admission, depending on the major. Additionally, the university uses the A01 combination (Mathematics, Physics, English) for some non-language majors.

The combined admission method is for candidates with international certificates or foreign language proficiency certificates according to the 6-level Foreign Language Proficiency Framework for Vietnam; with aptitude test scores of Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University of Education of 105/150 and 850/1200 or higher respectively; a thinking skills assessment score of Hanoi University of Science and Technology of 21/30 or higher (organized in the 2023-2024 academic year); and students from specialized and bilingual classes at specialized high schools.
If using scores from international standardized tests, candidates need to achieve a minimum of 1100/1600 on the SAT, 24/36 on the ACT, or A-Level scores of 60/100 in each subject.
Candidates who win third prize or higher in provincial or city-level excellent student competitions; are members of the national excellent student team in grades 11 or 12; participate in the national science and technology competition organized by the Ministry of Education and Training; or participate in the monthly rounds of the "Road to Olympia" competition in the 2023-2024 school year are also eligible.
The above groups of candidates need to meet the general criterion of having an average score of 7 or higher in foreign language subjects and an average score of 7 or higher across 5 semesters of high school (excluding the second semester of 12th grade).
The admission criteria and subject combinations for the various majors at Hanoi University in 2024 are as follows:
For the admission method based on the 2024 high school graduation exam results, the total score for admission includes priority points (if any) and the score of the main exam subject multiplied by a factor of 2, ranked from highest to lowest. The score calculation is as follows: Math score + Literature score + (Foreign language score x 2) + (priority points x 4/3).
Specifically for the fields of Financial Technology, Information Technology, Advanced Program Information Technology, and Multimedia Communication, the scoring formula is: Math score + Foreign Language score (coefficient 1) + Physics (or Literature) score + priority points (coefficient 1).
Last year, the cutoff scores for admission to Hanoi University based on the high school graduation exam results ranged from 24.2 to 36.15 points on a 40-point scale. The highest cutoff score was for Korean Language, followed by Chinese Language and English Language with 35.75 and 35.38 points respectively.
