On December 20, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer officially appointed Mr. Peter Mandelson, former Minister and European Union (EU) Trade Commissioner, as British Ambassador to the United States.
Mr Mandelson, 71, is expected to take up his post early next year when Donald Trump returns to the White House for a second term. It will be the first time in decades that Britain has appointed a politician rather than a career diplomat to the post of ambassador to the US.
However, the appointment was immediately met with backlash from Mr Trump's campaign team. Campaign co-manager Chris LaCivita criticized the X network, recalling Mr Mandelson's previous description of the Republican leader as "almost a white nationalist and racist".
The decision comes amid concerns about the prospects for the “special relationship” between London and Washington, especially as Mr Trump threatens to impose sweeping tariffs on imports.
Mr Mandelson, who served as EU trade commissioner from 2004 to 2008 and co-founded international public policy consultancy Global Counsel, called it a "great honour" and pledged to promote the historic alliance between the two countries.
Mr Mandelson's predecessor was Ms Karen Pierce, who was highly regarded for establishing close relationships with many of Mr Trump's staff and advisers.
