These days, garden owners growing yellow apricot flowers in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City are urgently taking care of each pot of apricot flowers to serve the Tet flower market with the hope that this year will be prosperous.

More than a week until Lunar New Year, despite facing many difficulties due to weather and economy, many apricot garden owners are still persistent in taking care of each apricot pot, hoping to bring quality products to meet people's Tet needs.

Selling apricots through Youtubers

Specializing in growing mai giao in Thu Duc, Mr. Truong Nguyen Hoa (residing in Binh Loi commune, Binh Chanh district) said that with an area of 3 hectares of land, he grows about 12,000 mai trees.

According to Mr. Hoa, the cold weather this year has caused the apricot flower buds to be uneven. In addition, the Tet apricot market has not yet improved. Last year, Mr. Hoa sold about 1,000 trees, but this year, he expects to sell only 700-800 trees.

Mr. Hoa, a yellow apricot farmer in Binh Loi commune, Binh Chanh district (HCMC), takes care of the apricot blossoms so that traders can come and get them in time for Tet.

"Recently, people prefer to rent apricot blossoms more. However, I don't rent them because renting requires transportation, which takes a lot of time and effort. Besides, I also sell apricot blossoms through Youtubers, who will come to my garden to film.

I did not expect that selling in this way would reach customers more effectively than the traditional way, each year a few hundred more trees are sold. During Tet, I recruit about 6-7 workers to support the picking of mai leaves and care for them with a salary of nearly 1 million VND/day" - Mr. Hoa said.

Mr. Hoa said that in the near future, he will plant new varieties because only planting one type of apricot will make it difficult to attract customers. In particular, he noticed that the Binh Loi super-flower apricot variety is a trend. However, Mr. Hoa does not plant this variety because the flowers are prone to drooping and are not as beautiful as expected.

With an area of about 3 hectares, Mr. Hoa planted about 12,000 yellow apricot trees.

Having worked as a mai tree grower at Mr. Hoa's house for 7 years, Mr. Pham Van Toan (living in Binh Chanh district) said he is the main worker in growing mai trees.

"During Tet, I take care of the apricot blossoms every day. In particular, I often remove the apricot blossoms from the trees. I have to watch each eye and skin of the tree to create quality apricot blossoms for the apricot blossom market. With the apricot blossom business, a part of the income from here is enough to live on and I hope for more every Tet because Mr. Hoa also sells through Youtubers, and there are also many online customers who come to see them in person," said Mr. Toan.

Mr. Toan is the main apricot grower in Mr. Hoa's house, Binh Loi commune, Binh Chanh district (HCMC).

Owning a Youtube channel with about 40,000 followers, Mr. Nguyen Truc Linh (44 years old, residing in Binh Loi commune, Binh Chanh district) said he has been doing online business for 6 years.

“Every year, I plant about 7,000-8,000 apricot trees in my garden. I sell both directly and online to consume my products. I also make videos instructing people on how to care for apricot trees, sharing experiences in growing apricot trees suitable for each stage of the year, each month and each season,” said Mr. Linh.

However, in recent years, the emergence of many social media platforms has increased competition among apricot garden owners. However, his apricot garden still maintains a stable number of customers. Mr. Linh believes that the difficult economic situation is the main reason why people reduce the purchase of apricot trees for display.

“Selling mai online brings many benefits, helping customers easily see mai trees without having to spend time traveling there, customers in different regions can also access the product.

I have an advantage selling online. Because the selling price is often higher than selling directly at the garden. Although the online price may be a little lower, the number of sales is higher, helping to bring higher business efficiency" - Mr. Linh commented.

Mr. Linh filmed a clip to help other yellow apricot garden owners in Binh Chanh district (HCMC) introduce their products.

Currently, Mr. Linh's apricot garden is busy preparing to deliver apricots with full buds to serve the Tet market. His apricot garden focuses on growing medium-sized apricot varieties at affordable prices so that people in many income segments can access and use them for entertainment.

Mr. Linh transported the Thu Duc mai giao trees to the market to sell.

Customers prefer to rent than buy.

In order to prepare to bring mai trees to the Tet market for rent and sale, Mr. Nguyen Hong Chuong (residing in Da Phuoc commune, Binh Chanh district) is busy taking care of the mai tree to prepare for sale during Tet.

Mr. Chuong has about 20 years of experience in the apricot blossom industry. However, Mr. Chuong said that due to the difficult economic situation, he stopped importing apricot blossoms in 2022.

Mr. Chuong said that the apricot pots priced at 300,000 VND have been reduced to 250,000 VND but are still unsold.

“Since the pandemic, the import of mai flowers has decreased, and the mai flower market has also stagnated. The economy is difficult, and it is not easy for mai garden owners to sell mai flowers. However, every year I take care of them with the hope that each year will be better.

I specialize in renting mai trees, the rental price of a mai tree ranges from several million VND depending on the time and the condition of the flowers and buds. The mai tree can be sold for 300,000 VND, but this year it is only 250,000 VND but still no one buys it" - Mr. Chuong said.

According to Mr. Chuong, he used to sell 500 to 1,000 trees every year, but now he only has about 300 to 400 trees left. His main apricot variety is Thu Duc apricot.

“Customers now mainly rent apricot blossoms, not buy them. Apricot blossoms are valuable, about 10 million VND, but if rented, the price can drop to only 5-7 million VND. I do not sell to traders, most of my regular customers are restaurants or close friends. In the near future, I may post on social networks like my Facebook or Zalo so that more people know about them,” said Mr. Chuong.

Help apricot garden owners connect to the market

Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Cong, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Binh Loi Commune (Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) said that drought or untimely heavy rain can cause the plant's ability to produce flowers to not meet requirements.

Besides, the market for apricot consumption also changes every year, making it difficult for apricot garden owners to sell their products.

"The Farmers' Association, together with local authorities, organizes events such as the apricot blossom route and displays at Nguyen Hue flower street to help apricot garden owners have the opportunity to bring their products to customers.

In addition, the Farmers' Association also supports apricot garden owners in updating information on market demand, prices and trends to help apricot garden owners adjust their production plans appropriately," said Ms. Cong.
