According to census data released on May 29, Japan's population has decreased by more than 3 million people compared to 2020, equivalent to a 2.5% decline over the past five years.
This is the sharpest decline since Japan began conducting the survey twice a decade more than 100 years ago, and more than three times the decline recorded during the 2015-2020 period.

Speaking to reporters, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said the new figures "once again show that Japan's declining population is becoming more serious."
Japan has long been considered one of the countries with the lowest birth rates and the fastest aging population in the world .
Official figures also show that the number of newborns in Japan continued to decline for the 10th consecutive year in 2025, with a total of 705,809 babies born.
Over the years, central and local governments in Japan have implemented various measures to encourage people to marry and have children, including developing dating apps, increasing child-rearing allowances, and expanding parental leave.
However, these policies have not yet brought about significant changes.
Amid a continuing population decline, immigration has been mentioned as a potential solution to supplement the workforce. However, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has recently taken a tougher stance against foreign immigration.
