"What the unprecedented impeachment of the president eight years ago left in the history of constitutional government was extreme division and chaos in South Korea. That scar remains deeply imprinted in our society. But we cannot repeat the tragedy that could paralyze state operations and suspend constitutional government through impeachment of the president," said People's Power Party (PPP) spokesman Shin Dong-uk.

Mr. Shin was referring to the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in 2016, which led to her suspension from office and subsequent imprisonment for corruption. At the time, South Korean politics was shaken by the Park scandal.

"We will prepare a plan to resolve the political situation positively that the people can accept to minimize chaos in state affairs. We will quickly resolve this crisis in an orderly and responsible manner rather than impeachment," Mr. Shin affirmed.

Meanwhile, South Korea's main opposition Democratic Party said it would not give up its bid to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol after a failed vote on the issue in parliament on December 7.

"We failed (to impeach the president) and did not produce the desired results. However, we will never give up," said Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party.

Democratic Party leader Park Chan-dae said he would continue to impeach Yoon every Saturday.

According to Yonhap , the South Korean National Assembly has dropped the impeachment motion due to lack of quorum. The ruling People's Power Party (PPP) lawmakers boycotted the vote by leaving the National Assembly. Only three PPP lawmakers remained.

A minimum of 200 votes are needed to pass an impeachment motion. Opposition parties have 192 seats in parliament, while the ruling PPP has 108.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, a member of the PPP, pledged to do his best to stabilize the situation.

Mr. Han called on cabinet members and public officials to fulfill their responsibilities, saying he valued the people's sentiments and the president's remarks.

"I will do my best to quickly stabilize the current situation," Mr. Han said in a statement.

After the unsuccessful vote, lawmaker Choo Kyung-ho - leader of the PPP parliamentary group - resigned.

Ahead of the vote, Mr. Yoon publicly apologized for his declaration of martial law on December 3 and said he would leave it to the ruling party to decide on the presidency and how to stabilize the country's affairs.

PPP leader Han Dong-hoon later said he would discuss with the prime minister related issues to minimize the impact of the incident.

According to observers, although he escaped the risk of impeachment, Mr. Yoon will still face legal risks in the coming time, as well as continued efforts by the Democratic Party to impeach him.
