Recreating the image of General Vo Nguyen Giap through the art of Cheo

On July 27, Hanoi Radio and Television brought the Cheo play "General Vo Nguyen Giap" back to the public on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 - July 27, 2025).

The play is based on the entire Dien Bien Phu victory, recreating the 56 days and nights of arduous and resilient fighting of our army and people. The plot revolves around the image of General Vo Nguyen Giap in the historic campaign, focusing especially on the important decision when the General changed tactics from "fight fast, win fast" to "fight steady, advance steady."

The play depicts the difficult period when the General faced challenges and doubts from his soldiers about this decision. However, with his intelligence and love for his soldiers, the General explained and convinced everyone, leading to a resounding victory.

This is a typical work of art staged by the Army Cheo Theater and first performed in August 2024, winning the Gold Medal at the 2024 Hanoi Open Theater Festival.

From the script by Dr. Nguyen Dang Chuong, People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui adapted the play and directed it. The production team also included Meritorious Artist Dao Tuan Hai in charge of music , People's Artist Nguyen Dat Tang in art design, People's Artist Tu Long in art direction...

Sharing about the staging process, People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui said the biggest challenge was to highlight the General's humane side, especially in his treatment of wounded soldiers.

She chose to limit stage techniques, focusing on lyrical passages to touch the audience's emotions. The scene where the General visits the wounded soldiers, without dialogue, only performed with eyes and silence, is considered by her to be "valuable" and touches the audience's emotions the most. The vitality of the play is proven through the emotions of audiences of all ages, especially students and veterans who were moved to tears.

People's Artist Trinh Minh Tien, who played the role of the General, was most impressed with the "witness battle" scene between the General and General Navarre and the sequence where the order was changed from "fight fast, win fast" to "fight steady, advance steady" as the highlight, showing the bravery and concerns of the commander.
