While playing with a toy gun with his brother, a 5-year-old boy (living in Tay Ninh) was suddenly pierced in the cheek by an iron ball.

The bullet penetrated the left cheek, causing skin tears, muscle tissue damage, heavy bleeding and breaking the bone structure of the anterior and posterior walls of the left maxillary sinus, a particularly dangerous location, close to the eye socket, nasal sinus and large blood vessels in the facial area.

Immediately after the accident, the child was taken to the emergency room at Xuyen A Tay Ninh General Hospital by his family in a state of panic.

On April 23, Master - Doctor Nguyen Tat Dong, Interdisciplinary Department, Xuyen A Tay Ninh General Hospital said that after receiving the child patient, the doctors of the Emergency Department quickly performed first aid and ordered a CT scan. The results showed that the radiopaque foreign body had penetrated the back of the left maxillary sinus, located at the pterygopalatine fossa, fractured the anterior and posterior walls of the sinus, and had a hematoma in the sinus cavity.

Faced with this dangerous situation, the Emergency Department quickly consulted with the Interdisciplinary Department and decided on emergency surgery. The surgical team urgently performed endoscopic surgery to remove the foreign object. With the support of a modern endoscopic system, the doctors safely removed the iron ball, while treating bone damage, stopping bleeding, and preserving important structures of the baby's face.

After the surgery, the patient was transferred to the recovery area in a stable, conscious condition. After receiving post-operative care, the child's health recovered well, the wound did not leave any dangerous complications and he was discharged after 3 days of treatment.

Don't be subjective when choosing toys for children.

According to Dr. Dong, through the above accident, if the family had taken the child to the emergency room just a little later, the marble could have damaged nearby organs such as the eyes due to widespread infection or even threatened his life.

"Children cannot distinguish between harmless games and potential dangers. Seemingly harmless objects such as marbles, toy guns, magnets, etc. can cause serious consequences. Always supervise, remind and create a safe play environment for children because just one minute of carelessness can have lifelong consequences," the doctor advised.
