According to iPhoneSoft, the iPad generations including the first 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch Pro models, and the 5th generation iPad will not be updated to iPadOS 17 when this platform is launched. In early April, another reputable source also confirmed that the above 3 models will stop at iPadOS 16, which will be released in 2022.
Based on the leaked information above, users of iPad generations including Pro 2017 and later, Air (3rd generation and later), iPad Gen 6 or later, and iPad Mini 5 and Mini 6 will be updated to the latest operating system version for their devices. iPadOS 17 is expected to be released with iOS 17, not long after the annual event to introduce the latest iPhone (usually taking place in September).
iPadOS 17 may not appear on the first generation iPad Pro
Note that just because any iPad model is on Apple's update support list doesn't mean it can run all the new features the new platform brings. For example, iOS 15 is compatible with all devices running iOS 14, but some new features won't be available on older iPhones.
Regarding the list of iPhones that will be upgraded to iOS 17, there are still many conflicting reports about the names of the models that will stop updating. According to the product life cycle, iOS 16 is expected to be the last operating system for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X. However, there are sources that confirm that all iPhones running iOS 16 will be upgraded to iOS 17, including devices using the A11 chip (the 3 models mentioned above).
Last year, iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 stopped updating on a fairly long list of devices, including the iPhone 6s/6s Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, the last iPod, the second-generation iPad Air, and the fourth-generation iPad Mini.
iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 are expected to be announced at the Apple WWCD event on June 5.
