On August 21, in Hung My commune, Vinh Long Agricultural Extension Center coordinated with the Commune People's Committee to organize a conference to review the model "Rice cultivation to reduce emissions to serve the sustainable development of rice export material areas in the Mekong Delta".
Attending the event were Mr. Chau Huu Tri - Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, leaders of communes, enterprises, cooperatives and farmers participating in the model.
Delegates visited and evaluated emission-reducing rice fields at Phuoc Hao Agricultural Cooperative. |
The model is deployed at Phuoc Hao Cooperative with an area of 50 hectares in the 2025 Summer-Autumn rice crop, aiming to produce high-quality rice, with a planting area code, reducing input costs by at least 15% compared to mass production. The highlight is the application of straw rolling equipment and stubble treatment products, not burying raw straw in flooded fields to reduce CH4 emissions. Post-harvest straw is collected and treated to decompose right in the field within 8-10 days.
Initial results were positive, farmers saved costs by reducing seeding by 40-50%, reducing fertilizer by 20-30%, and reducing at least 2 sprayings of pesticides. Average yield reached 6.8 tons/ha, an increase of 6-7% compared to outside the model; profit increased by 28%, equivalent to more than 6 million VND/ha. At the same time, emissions were reduced by 20-30%, contributing to environmental protection.
Technical staff instruct farmers on how to use fertilizer combined with drones in the emission reduction rice model at Phuoc Hao Agricultural Cooperative. |
Mr. Chau Huu Tri - Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center said that this is an important step to transform rice production towards modernity, associated with the requirement of reducing emissions. We will continue to accompany farmers, provide technical support, connect consumption so that the model can be replicated, form a sustainable rice material area for export, build a local rice brand with reduced emissions, contributing to increasing the value of the province's rice industry.
