Documentary director Dao Trong Khanh passed away

Director Dao Trong Khanh (born in 1940 in Kien Thuy District, Hai Phong) is one of the leading directors and producers of Vietnamese documentary cinema. With his contributions to cinema in general and the field of documentary films in particular, he was awarded the title of People's Artist by the State (in 2000) and the State Prize (in 2007).

In the early 1960s, before entering the film industry, Dao Trong Khanh was a worker at Hai Phong port. In 1965, he decided to choose documentary filmmaking as his career. He personally held a camera to record historical footage of Hai Phong during the days when American planes bombed it.

During many years working at the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio, he took on most of the roles such as scriptwriting, commentary writing, directing... for dozens of different documentaries.

Director Dao Trong Khanh is considered a specialist in making documentaries about leaders and country leaders at the former Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio, with films about President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap, Prime Minister Pham Van Dong... The person he had the most opportunities to meet and record documents with was General Vo Nguyen Giap.

Before embarking on a career in documentary filmmaking, he wrote many poems, which were loved by his friends under the pen name Dao Nguyen, but he only wrote impromptu poems, read them to his friends and then… forgot them, without carefully storing them.

He is the "character" in Luu Quang Vu's poem, which impressed many people: "Khanh's poetry is as sad as the heart of the country/Good poetry, but no one uses it in a chaotic world" ... Dao Trong Khanh's poetry made even a talented poet like Luu Quang Vu exclaim in praise.

Unfortunately, Dao Trong Khanh no longer has all of his poems, not enough to collect them into a collection, but they have recently been printed in two collections of short stories and memoirs, titled Land and People . The book was compiled by artist Le Thiet Cuong, a close friend and younger brother of director Dao Trong Khanh.
