Director Quoc Thao interacted with the audience about the musical he took care of for the young cast of students from class K14 who had graduated after their apprenticeship at Quoc Thao Theater.
On the evening of June 8, at Quoc Thao Stage (HCMC), the classic play "Thunderstorm" by Chinese writer Cao Ngu was vividly recreated through the talented direction of director Quoc Thao and a cast of promising young actors.
Choosing the musical style to tell the tragedy of an old bourgeois family amidst the storm of the times, the director not only renews the classical material but also takes the audience into the deepest area of pain - where each character is not only present but also resonates with a fierce inner voice.
Retelling a tragedy with a modern breath
"Thunderstorm" is a play with a tight structure, with conflicts of class, morality, and love suffocated in a rotten society. When adapted into a musical by director Quoc Thao, those layers of emotions are even more sublime.
Melody, rhythm and creative scene transitions have turned the stage into a place where reality and metaphor, character voices and audience emotions intersect.
Moc Anh plays the role of Phồn Y but has a soulful voice. She always performs the theme songs, expressing the character's feelings, bringing many emotions.
Huu Khang (Lu Quy), Doan Canh Nghi (Lu Tu Phuong) in the play "Thunderstorm"
Each song, each scream or whisper is built on a refined musical background, helping the audience easily reach the deep emotions that the characters are suffering. That innovation does not destroy the spirit of the original work, but on the contrary, makes the tragedy in "Thunderstorm" more familiar and easier to sympathize with today's young audience.
Young cast – new life for old works
A highlight is the emotional and disciplined performance of the young cast. My Thanh as Thi Binh portrays an old-fashioned, patient woman full of silent pain.
Moc Anh (Phon Y), Doan Canh Nghi (Lu Tu Phuong) and Thanh Hung (as Chu Xung)
Minh Huy (Chu Binh) and Moc Anh (Phon Y) bring the image of a couple full of ideals but helpless in the face of prejudice and harsh reality. Moc Anh has highlighted the fragility and steadfastness in Phon Y - a modern girl who dares to love, dares to live, but is ultimately crushed in the cruel cycle of family and society.
A scene from the musical "Thunderstorm"
Hoang Kim Tien (Chu Phac Vien) and Thanh Hung (Chu Xung) have portrayed well the image of two men in a powerful house, the father is corrupted by lust but keeps trying to play the moral role, while the son in this production - Chu Xung is the rebel who brings tragedy.
Huu Khang (Lu Quy), Doan Canh Nghi (Lu Tu Phuong) and Kim Quoc Nhan (Lu Dai Hai) also contributed to clearly portraying class injustice and the hidden anger of the exploited class.
They are the necessary low notes to add edge to this sorrowful symphony. The most surprising is Kim Quoc Nhan, who plays the role of Lu Tu Hai strongly, with many hidden inner feelings.
Chu Binh (Quoc Thao) presents a graduation certificate to Chu Binh (Minh Huy) - this role made artist Quoc Thao famous in the 80s of the last century.
The play ends with emotional lyrics, expressing the depths of the souls of unfortunate people. It is not only the storm of the Chu family in "Thunderstorm", but also the storm of the hearts of many people today who are living amidst injustice, prejudice and the desire for love.
Through the staging of Quoc Thao and the emotional involvement of the young generation of actors, the musical "Thunderstorm" has truly returned, not as an old stage work, but as a bell that awakens the memories that have never stopped aching in a society that was once devastated, and of people who have never stopped longing to live as themselves.
Emotional short film "Unfinished"
Notably, before stepping onto the stage, the actors had a short film report called "Dang Do" (Unfinished) directed by Nguyen Gia Bao, under the guidance of Meritorious Artist Nham Minh Hien. This part is like a lesson in "Acting in front of the camera".
The film tells the sad story of a young man who works as a gigolo, returning to his hometown to marry the girl he has been with since childhood. But his dark past is exposed, and his seemingly close-knit happiness is shattered. The appearance of a "party crasher" - representing prejudice and contempt - causes the engagement to fall apart, and his dream of changing his life is forever "unfinished".
Quoc Thao stage teachers congratulate the young actors of class K14 on graduating with the musical "Thunderstorm".
Quoc Thao Drama Theater also has teachers who love their profession and are responsible for creating opportunities for the development of young human resources of the theater such as: People's Artist Viet Anh, Meritorious Artist Minh Nhi, Meritorious Artist Tuyet Thu, Meritorious Artist Ngoc Trinh, artist Huu Nghia, Master Duc Thanh, choreographer Hai Au, makeup instructor To Loan...
