Laying the foundation for a new phase of ASEAN sports cooperation

VHO - On the morning of October 13, the 16th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Sports (SOMS-16) will officially open in Hanoi. This is the opening meeting for the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-8) and related meetings in 2025.

Taking place over three days (October 13-15), the conference gathered representatives of sports agencies of ASEAN member countries to review the results of the 2021-2025 period and propose directions for the new cooperation period.

Immediately after the opening session, the Conference will adopt the agenda, including key contents such as the final review of the ASEAN Action Plan on Sports 2021–2025, discussion of the ASEAN–FIFA Memorandum of Understanding and update on the implementation progress of the ASEAN High Performance Sports Training Centre in Malaysia – a key project towards sustainable development and enhancing regional coaching capacity.

The afternoon session on October 13th spent time discussing the ASEAN Sports Day celebrations and listening to reports on preparations for the 33rd SEA Games and the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand – two major events considered a measure of the organizational capacity and solidarity of Southeast Asian sports.

On the second working day, SOMS-16 continued to expand cooperation with international organizations such as the International Football Federation (FIFA), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and prepared for the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-8).

On the final working day, delegates will focus on discussing promoting ASEAN-Japan cooperation until 2030 and preparing for the 5th ASEAN + Japan Ministerial Meeting, marking a profound step forward in regional cooperation...

SOMS-16 is considered an important stepping stone to build a common vision for ASEAN sports development – ​​where cultural values, solidarity and innovation are connected in the same development rhythm.

The conference is expected to contribute to strengthening the role of sports as an effective people-to-people diplomacy channel, promoting cooperation, friendship and the image of a united, sustainable, and future-oriented ASEAN.
