The James Beard Awards were established in 1990 and named after the late American chef. Vince Nguyen and the James Beard Medal

Vince Nguyen is the owner of Berlu, a Vietnamese tasting menu restaurant in Portland, Oregon. This is a type of restaurant with a menu that includes many dishes, but each dish is only a small portion, just enough for one person, and is elaborately decorated.

His restaurant Berlu serves dishes that combine street style with dishes usually only served in high-end restaurants, or traditional dishes combined with modern ideas.

In 2019, the restaurant was named a “rising star” by The Oregonian . During the Covid-19 pandemic, the restaurant did not close but reinvented itself by changing its style, then turning to baking. Before opening Berlu in 2019 and Berlu Bakery in 2020, Vince Nguyen started his career at a two-Michelin-starred restaurant in Los Angeles, California. He then slowly worked his way up to become a sous chef at Castagna in Portland and at tasting menu restaurants such as Noma in Denmark and The Royal Mail in Australia.
