Performing endoscopy, doctors discovered a narrow ear canal with a lot of fresh blood. When the blood was drained, a white moving foreign object was observed, many images resembling maggot filled the tympanic cavity, perforated tympanic membrane.
After pre-operative tests, the patient was taken to the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation Surgery. Here, doctors from the Department of Otolaryngology performed an endoscopy and removed dozens of maggots living in the patient's middle ear. The patient's health is currently stable and he continues to be treated at the hospital for monitoring by doctors.
Doctors from the ENT Department of Quang Tri General Hospital said that patients with a history of otitis media and pus will attract female flies to lay eggs and develop into maggots after a few hours. Maggots develop in the ear canal, the longer they are left, the more dangerous they become. When they grow up, they can attack the middle ear, inner ear and surrounding organs, causing serious complications such as meningitis, otitis media, leading to death.
