High school graduation exam physics and chemistry questions: Candidates say it's easy, just need to study textbooks

In contrast to the difficulty of the English and math questions on the high school graduation exam, candidates said that the physics and chemistry questions were 'quite easy', with some students only needing more than half the time to complete the test because many questions only asked basic theory from the textbook.

Why is the high school graduation exam "surprisingly easy"?

Speaking to Thanh Nien on June 27 at the exam site of Le Loi Secondary School (HCMC), many high school graduation candidates expressed their excitement because they did well in natural sciences, especially physics and chemistry. “The physics exam focuses more on theory and is not as difficult as the math exam. For example, the short answer section only has questions that require numbers and calculations. I find it quite easy, as long as I am alert, I can do it,” said Ho Hien Long, a student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC).

Hoang Xuan Nha Khue, a student at the same school, commented that the multiple choice test was “surprisingly easy, probably for those who only want to graduate” while the true-false and short answer tests “had a slight differentiation”. “I only found the question of finding the mass of oxygen removed from the tank a bit difficult, but I could get the result after a few lines of the calculator. The remaining questions were all at the recognition level,” Khue said, predicting that she would score above 9 points.

Meanwhile, Dieu Hoang Cat Tien, a student at the same school, said that the high school graduation exam was "easier than the in-class tests and semester exams at school". Therefore, Tien felt comfortable with physics even though the questions were still varied in difficulty.

“Most of the 18-question multiple-choice questions are theoretical, as long as you know the lesson and read the textbook, you can do it all. The true-false part is more about practical experiments, I think it is about understanding and application, while the short answer part is about application and high application. This question is not as tricky as the math question, generally speaking, if you know the lesson and study, you can do it,” the female student commented.

Nguyen Phuc Hai My, a student at Marie Curie High School (HCMC), also felt that the physics test was easier than the sample test and the practice test. "I did all the questions but I don't know if there were any mistakes. I think this year's physics score will be high," the female student predicted. Nguyen Hoang Nam, a student at the same school, confirmed that the test was "very, very easy." "I did part 1 for about 5 minutes, parts 2 and 3 each took 10 minutes, about half an hour to finish the whole test," Nam said, estimating that he got 8-9 points for this subject.

Chemistry questions require solid high school knowledge

Being quite good at chemistry, Dang Phan Gia Bao, a student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, said that the test was easier and shorter than the school's mock test. Although easy, the test covered a lot of chemistry knowledge from grades 10 to 12, including inorganic and organic chemistry, and math problems calculating mass and concentration of substances. "I think the test was moderately differentiated, focusing on small ideas in the multiple choice true-false section and setting traps in the short answer section. In short, if you read the test carefully and have a solid knowledge base, you will be able to do the test," the male student said.

Meanwhile, Dong Minh Khanh, a student at the same school, said that the test was not too easy and one had to be really good to get an 8.

“Getting full 3 points in part 1 is very easy because the theoretical questions are all focused, not tricky. But in part 2, the illustrative questions focus on real-life examples such as phenomena, applications, and short math, while the real questions are more theoretical, even if there are practical applications, they are questions about reactions in the laboratory, hypothetical experiments, so I find it quite difficult,” Khanh analyzed.

As for part 3 - short answer, the male student said he could do 3-4 questions, but the knowledge in the questions spanned the entire high school curriculum, so it required thinking ability and a solid grasp of knowledge. "The last two long problems were not difficult but easy to confuse, if you don't allocate time you won't be able to do them in time," Khanh said.

Frankly sharing that she “hadn’t studied anything” in chemistry, Do Nguyen Anh Thu, a student at the same school, was still confident that she could do most of the test. “This test is still easy for students like me who haven’t studied anything, only blocking 2-3 points in the short essay section, while for most of the options, you just need to ‘chew up’ the entire textbook to be sure to do it,” the female student compared.

This year's high school graduation exam had more than 1.1 million candidates participating, an increase of 100,000 candidates compared to last year. According to information from the Ministry of Education and Training, it is expected that at 8:00 a.m. on July 16, the Ministry of Education and Training will announce the results of the 2025 high school graduation exam and consider recognizing high school graduation no later than July 18.
