Thai Nguyen University of Education has just provided more information about the dormitory being accused of refusing to accept relief food for students during the flooding caused by storm Matmo.

The school said that at around 10:30 a.m. on October 8, a resident went to the school dormitory to meet with the management staff and expressed his wish to support some lunches for students. Because he had not yet received instructions from the leadership, this staff did not make a decision on his own and discussed it with the cafeteria service provider. Afterwards, the cafeteria staff made a decision on their own and responded that they would not accept the supported meals.

"This unfortunate incident arose due to the cafeteria staff's own decision, without any direction or intervention from the school," said a school representative.

In addition, the temporary practice of only accepting cash when selling lunch on the same day was also done by this individual, not the school's policy.

The school said that since the afternoon of the same day (October 8), it has coordinated with support units and benefactors to ensure the provision of free meals for all students in dormitories affected by storms and floods.

The school also confirmed that there were no instructions related to the above incidents. “The cafeteria service unit has committed to keeping the price of meals the same as usual, there is no price increase or group benefits in the process of serving students during the storm and flood,” the school report stated.

The leaders of Thai Nguyen University of Education said that the school is located in a deeply flooded area of the province, one of the areas most heavily affected by the recent storm and flood.

“Many houses of school leaders were deeply flooded and lost phone signal on the morning of October 8, so in the process of responding to the flood, there were mistakes and lack of timeliness, causing unexpected impacts. Although the incident did not originate from personal intention, the school leaders felt responsible and seriously learned from the experience,” the school representative expressed.

School leaders said they had worked with the cafeteria and requested the suspension of the employee responsible for the mistake, promising not to repeat the offense.

"The school hopes to receive the sharing and sympathy of all levels, sectors, parents and the whole society. We commit to promptly remedy, review the process, strengthen inspection and supervision to prevent similar situations from happening in the future," the school's report said.
