On April 3, information from Hoe Nhai General Hospital ( Hanoi ), the team of Dr. Nguyen Minh Nghia, Head of the hospital's Cosmetic Surgery Department, successfully performed surgery on a female patient whose breast implant ruptured while she was pregnant.
Ms. VHM suddenly discovered that her breast implant ruptured during pregnancy.
It is known that patient VHM (27 years old, Thai Binh ) had breast augmentation 7 years ago with Allergan breast implants at a cosmetic facility in Hanoi. The patient discovered the ruptured breast implant during an ultrasound during pregnancy.
Dr. Nguyen Minh Nghia said that the case of a pregnant female patient with a ruptured breast implant is a rare case. Fortunately, the patient had breast augmentation under the pectoralis major muscle and the rupture occurred in a fibrous capsule formed by inflammation, which helps protect the gel from spreading to surrounding tissues. However, the thick and hard fibrous capsule caused pain to the patient.
"The rupture of the bag can occur before the patient becomes pregnant but is not detected. During pregnancy, the patient's breasts become engorged, causing more chest pain and discomfort, so the patient goes to the doctor and discovers the rupture of the breast bag," Dr. Nghia informed.
Dr. Nghia said that he closely monitored the patient throughout the pregnancy as well as after giving birth, waiting until the mother and child were completely stable and healthy enough to perform surgery to remove the ruptured sac, peel off the entire fibrous capsule formed by the inflammation of the sac and replace it with a new, softer sac, meeting aesthetic needs. Currently, the patient has recovered well, the surgical wound has healed, and her psychology is stable.
According to Dr. Minh Nghia, breast implants can rupture due to many reasons, such as sharp objects (sewing needles, syringes, knives), strong external forces when the breast implant is of poor quality... The rupture can also be due to the quality of the breast implant manufacturer or after a long period of implantation, the quality will deteriorate and the implant will easily tear.
If breast implant rupture is not detected and treated early, the accumulated fluid can lead to inflammatory reactions, widespread infection, causing breast deformation, requiring long-term treatment. Therefore, doctors recommend that in cases of breast implant placement, it is necessary to check and examine when there are abnormal signs such as swelling, pain, tension, breast deformation, etc. If no abnormal signs are detected, after about 7-8 years, an ultrasound and X-ray should be performed to check and have timely treatment methods to avoid unfortunate incidents.
