Intensify testing of new rice varieties.

In order to improve rice productivity and quality, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection has proactively coordinated with plant seed production and trading units to conduct trials of new rice varieties in many localities throughout the province. Through this process, they have gradually selected and proposed the addition of suitable new rice varieties with high yield and quality to the province's rice variety structure, replacing older varieties that are degenerating and susceptible to pests and diseases.

During the 2024-2025 winter-spring season, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Linh of Dang Xa Cooperative, Vinh Lam commune, Vinh Linh district, began a trial planting of the new VNR88 rice variety on an area of 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares).

Based on his observations, Mr. Linh assessed that the VNR88 rice variety has many advantages suitable for the local weather and soil conditions, such as: the rice plants tiller very vigorously, have large, upright leaves, a compact shape, short plant height, and good resistance to lodging; they are less susceptible to major pests and diseases, only mildly affected by bacterial stripe disease.

In particular, during the recent winter-spring season, the weather was quite unpredictable, with prolonged rain and cold spells, but the VNR88 rice variety showed excellent resistance. Harvest yields reached 3.4 - 3.5 quintals of dry rice per sao (approximately 1000 square meters).

"While other rice varieties in the same field experienced a significant drop in yield due to unfavorable weather conditions and various pest and disease infestations, the VNR88 rice variety has initially shown good resistance and adaptability. In practice, the production of this rice variety has shown that it requires low investment costs and yields high productivity, resulting in significantly higher economic efficiency."

"I suggest that the Plant Protection and Quarantine Sub-Department continue testing this rice variety on different fields and in different production seasons. If the yield and quality remain stable, it should be added to the province's rice variety structure for mass production," Mr. Linh said.

The director of Dang Xa Cooperative, Hoang Quang Lam, is very impressed with the advantages of the VNR88 rice variety. Especially noteworthy is that despite the unfavorable weather conditions during the recent winter-spring season, the VNR88 rice variety still yielded high productivity, demonstrating its resilience and adaptability, making it suitable for the harsh local climate.

"Looking at the results of the trial production, it's certain that in the coming seasons, many farmers will inquire about purchasing this VNR88 rice variety for production. However, to have a basis for widespread adoption, we suggest that the producer and the Sub-Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine continue to conduct trial plantings of this rice variety in other localities and in other seasons," Mr. Lam proposed.

According to Bui Phuoc Trang, Head of the Plant Protection and Quarantine Sub-Department, the trial of the VNR88 rice variety is part of the province's plan to renew its rice variety collection. Specifically, this year's winter-spring crop saw the unit collaborate with the Vietnam Seed Corporation (VINASEED) - Central Branch to conduct trials at two cooperatives, Dang Xa and Phuc Lam, in Vinh Lam commune, covering a total area of 1.5 hectares. This is a purebred, high-yielding, high-quality rice variety developed by VINASEED.

According to the manufacturer's recommendations, VNR88 has a growing season of 120-125 days in the winter-spring crop and 90-95 days in the summer-autumn crop. Yields range from 7-7.5 tons/ha, and with good intensive farming practices, it can reach 8-8.5 tons/ha. In the trial model, after 125 days of planting, the VNR88 rice variety yielded 6.8-7 tons/ha.

According to Mr. Trang, in order to have a basis for advising and proposing suitable new crop varieties with high yield and quality for inclusion in the crop structure for production in the province, the Plant Protection and Quarantine Sub-Department has recently coordinated with seed production and trading units inside and outside the province to monitor and conduct trial production of dozens of new rice varieties with potential for high yield and quality. In particular, during this year's winter-spring crop season alone, seven new rice varieties have been put into trial production: Hana167, Hana118, Huong Sen 16, BDR97, DT68, VNR88, and VNR98.

Observations revealed that due to unfavorable weather conditions during the winter-spring season, with prolonged rain and cold, most of the tested rice varieties had a growth period of 120-125 days, 7-10 days longer than their original growth dates. However, except for the two varieties Huong Sen 16 and Hana 118, which were sensitive to weather conditions, the remaining rice varieties showed relatively good resistance to adverse weather conditions. They were minimally or only mildly affected by major pests and diseases.

The harvest yields of Hana 167, BDR97, DT68, and VNR98 varieties reached 58-60 quintals/hectare, equivalent to or higher than the yields of other varieties sown in the region at the same time. The VNR88 variety, in particular, achieved a harvest yield of up to 70 quintals/hectare, 10-15 quintals/hectare higher than other varieties sown in the region at the same time. Most of the tested varieties were of high quality, with delicious, sticky, and soft rice. The selling price was comparable to other rice varieties on the market, ranging from 7,700 to 8,200 VND/kg.

Mr. Trang stated that, based on successful trial production during the winter-spring season, the Sub-Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine is continuing to coordinate with suppliers to support localities in conducting trial production during the summer-autumn season and several subsequent seasons. This will provide a more accurate basis for concluding the suitability and adaptability of these new rice varieties before adding them to the province's rice variety structure. Simultaneously, they are developing a plan for linking businesses with farmers in large-scale farming areas, guaranteeing the purchase of products from farmers when these rice varieties are introduced into mass production in the province.

“Over the past period, the unit has introduced quite a few new rice varieties for trial planting to replace those that have degenerated, but we have not yet found many varieties suitable for the local soil and climate conditions. Hopefully, in the following seasons, outstanding rice varieties like VNR88 will continue to yield high productivity and good pest and disease resistance so that they can supplement and replace old varieties, and be widely adopted by farmers,” Mr. Trang expressed.
