Promote testing of new rice varieties

In order to improve the productivity and quality of rice, recently, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (DPP) has actively coordinated with units producing and trading plant varieties to conduct trials of new rice varieties in many localities in the area. Thereby, step by step selecting and proposing to add new suitable rice varieties with high yield and quality to the province's rice variety structure, replacing old varieties that are degenerating and susceptible to pests and diseases.

In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Linh of Dang Xa Cooperative, Vinh Lam Commune, Vinh Linh District, tested the new rice variety VNR88 on an area of 5 sao.

Through monitoring, Mr. Linh assessed that the VNR88 rice variety has many advantages suitable for local weather and soil conditions such as: the rice plant tillers very well, the leaves are large, upright, compact, low plant height, good resistance to lodging; less susceptible to major pests and diseases, only slightly susceptible to bacterial stripe spot disease.

In particular, the last winter-spring crop had quite complicated weather, with prolonged cold and rain, but the VNR88 rice variety showed very good resistance. The yield reached 3.4 - 3.5 quintals of dry rice per sao.

“While other rice varieties in the same field have experienced serious declines in productivity due to unfavorable weather and many pests, the VNR88 rice variety has initially shown good resistance and adaptability. The actual production of this rice variety shows that the investment cost is low, the yield is high, so the economic efficiency is much higher.

"I propose that the Plant Protection Department continue testing this rice variety on different fields and production seasons. If the yield and quality remain stable, it should be added to the province's rice variety structure for mass production," said Mr. Linh.

Director of Dang Xa Cooperative Hoang Quang Lam is very pleased with the advantages of VNR88 rice variety. Especially in the unfavorable weather conditions of the last winter-spring crop, VNR88 rice variety still gave high yield, proving that this is a rice variety with good resistance and adaptability, suitable for the harsh climate in the locality.

“Looking at the results of the trial production, it is certain that in the coming seasons, many farmers will ask to buy this VNR88 variety for production. However, in order to have a basis for expansion, it is recommended that the producer and the Plant Protection Department continue to test-plant this rice variety in other localities and in other crop seasons,” Mr. Lam suggested.

Director of the Plant Protection Department Bui Phuoc Trang informed that the testing of VNR88 rice variety is part of the plan to renew the province's rice variety set. Specifically, this winter-spring crop, the unit has coordinated with Vietnam Seed Group Joint Stock Company (VINASEED) - Central Branch to carry out the experiment at 2 cooperatives Dang Xa and Phuc Lam, Vinh Lam commune with a total area of 1.5 hectares. This is a purebred, high-yielding, high-quality rice variety researched and selected by VINASEED.

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, VNR88 has a growing period of 120 - 125 days in the winter-spring crop; 90 - 95 days in the summer-autumn crop. The yield is 7 - 7.5 tons/ha, with good intensive cultivation it can reach 8 - 8.5 tons/ha. In the experimental model, after 125 days of sowing, VNR88 rice variety yielded 6.8 - 7 tons/ha.

According to Mr. Trang, in order to have a basis for consulting and proposing new suitable crop varieties with high productivity and quality to the seed structure for production in the province, recently, the Department of Plant Protection and Development has coordinated with seed production and trading units inside and outside the province to monitor and produce and test dozens of new rice varieties with potential for productivity and quality. Of which, in this year's winter-spring crop alone, 7 new rice varieties have been put into production and testing, including: Hana167, Hana118, Huong Sen 16, BDR97, DT68, VNR88, VNR98.

Through monitoring, due to unfavorable winter-spring weather, prolonged cold and rain, most of the tested rice varieties have a growing period of 120 - 125 days, 7 - 10 days longer than the variety profile. However, except for the two varieties Huong Sen 16 and Hana 118 that are sensitive to weather conditions, the remaining rice varieties show quite good resistance to unfavorable weather conditions. They are rarely infected or only slightly infected with major pests and diseases.

The yield of Hana 167, BDR97, DT68, VNR98 varieties is from 58 - 60 quintals/ha, equivalent to or higher than the yield of other varieties in the same sowing area. In particular, VNR88 variety has a yield of up to 70 quintals/ha, 10 - 15 quintals/ha higher than other varieties in the same sowing area. Most of the tested varieties are of high quality, with delicious, sticky, soft rice. The selling price is equivalent to other rice varieties on the market, ranging from 7,700 - 8,200 VND/kg.

Mr. Trang said that, based on the successful trial production in the winter-spring crop, the Plant Protection Department is continuing to coordinate with the supplier to support localities in trial production in the summer-autumn crop and some following crops to have a basis for more accurate conclusions on the suitability and adaptability of these new rice varieties before adding them to the province's rice variety structure. At the same time, a plan to link businesses with farmers in large fields will be developed, and farmers will be guaranteed products when these rice varieties are put into mass production in the province.

“In the past, the unit has put into trial cultivation many new rice varieties to replace the degraded ones, but has not found many rice varieties suitable for local soil and climate conditions. Hopefully, in the following seasons, outstanding rice varieties such as VNR88 will still have high yields and good resistance to pests and diseases so that they can be supplemented to replace old varieties and widely propagated for farmers to produce,” Mr. Trang expressed.
