Mekong Delta has heavy rain, drought and salinity continue to decrease

From May 11 to 20, saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta continued to decrease compared to the same period last year, thanks to the region entering the rainy season with many showers and thunderstorms.

According to the report of the Department of Hydrometeorology ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), significant rainfall recorded in provinces such as Vinh Long, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau (over 100mm) has contributed to reducing salinity in soil and surface water.

Salinity at stations on major rivers such as Vam Co, Cua Tieu, Cua Dai, Ham Luong, Co Chien and Song Hau are all lower than the highest level recorded in May 2024. The range of 4‰ salinity intrusion at river mouths ranges from 25–37km, depending on the area.

Situation of salinity intrusion level in the past 10 days:

Station River Salinity level (km)
Peace Small Door 18
Loc Thuan Dai Gate 18
An Thuan Ham Luong 10
Son Doc Ham Luong 20
Camp Wharf 10

Forecasts from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting show that this positive trend will continue until the end of May. The Southern region will continue to have many days of showers and thunderstorms, with rainfall ranging from 40-80mm, and higher in some places. The highest temperature ranges from 30-33°C, creating favorable conditions for drought and salinity to continue to decrease.
