Teachers all commented that this year's high school graduation exam in Literature closely followed the structure of the reference exam announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, and was not too difficult for candidates.
The exam follows a basic model, not making it difficult for candidates.
Dr. Trinh Thu Tuyet, Literature teacher, HOCMAI Education System, said that this year's Literature exam closely followed the structure of the reference exam announced by the Ministry of Education and Training.
Specifically, Part I - Reading Comprehension (3 points) includes 4 questions classified according to cognitive levels. The first two questions (questions 1 and 2) are questions that stop at the level of recognizing a detail that already exists in the text content, which is also the type of question that helps students easily achieve the maximum score. As in previous years, the questions about recognizing the content of the text essentially only require "recognizing" and copying a detail of the excerpt, which is a requirement that can be done too easily.
Question 3 requires students to apply their knowledge of Vietnamese, literature, art and life to interpret the expressive and emotional value of the comparison between the flow of the river and the history of artistic creation in the excerpt. This is a question that requires depth of thought and experience.
Question number 4 has the ability to classify students relatively well when the direction of the answer and the way of reasoning depend a lot on the students' thinking and independence and autonomy.
"In general, the reading comprehension questions are suitable for students, ensuring the right cognitive levels, and have practical significance for their future lifestyle," said Dr. Trinh Thu Tuyet.
In Part II - Writing (7.0 points), the exam retains the familiar structure, consisting of 2 parts: writing a social argumentative paragraph (2.0 points) and a literary argumentative essay (5.0 points).
In particular, the requirement of writing a social argumentative paragraph can more or less create surprise and interest for candidates when doing the test, when asking them to discuss "the meaning of respecting individuality". This is not a new question but quite practical, creating interest for students who are preparing to enter a new threshold of life, where they have to demonstrate their personal capacity and courage, expressing their own personality in the journey to success.
The literary argumentative question still uses the familiar structure, in which the first command is the main content of the argumentative essay, requiring candidates to analyze the first 18 lines in the excerpt "Dat Nuoc" by Nguyen Khoa Diem; the second command is general and advanced when asking candidates to "comment on the combination of Nguyen Khoa Diem's emotions and thoughts in the poem".
With the model of literary argumentative questions completely unchanged from the exam from 2017 to present in terms of genre, volume of argumentative materials, argumentative requirements, etc., candidates can learn a lot from previous exams, not surprisingly, if not to say that the too familiarity also reduces interest.
Candidates can simultaneously analyze the combination of Nguyen Khoa Diem’s emotions and thoughts in the poem while perceiving the content and artistic values of the poem, or separate it into two coherent arguments as required by the topic. The knowledge and skills of analyzing, perceiving, evaluating… in a literary essay are not difficult for students, after they have gone through a long journey of studying, reviewing and practicing.
Dr. Trinh Thu Tuyet said that, in general, the Literature exam ensures the correct requirements in terms of content and format of a high school graduation exam; it is also suitable for the requirements for a final exam of the Education program that was launched nearly two decades ago.
The two parts of Reading Comprehension and Writing in the exam follow the basic model from the 2017 exam until now with the structure, format and level of awareness in the questions without any surprises that always contain novelty for candidates, not difficult but also not bringing much excitement, an element that should not be lacking when coming to literature. The ability to classify the exam is still the classification of the levels of reading comprehension and text perception, the classification is recognized by the subtle and accurate assessment of the examiner.
Good test, not difficult for candidates to get high scores
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thanh, Head of the Literature Subject Group, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School ( Binh Duong City) commented that this year's high school graduation exam in Literature is the core knowledge of the 12th grade Literature program. The exam is no different from previous years in structure and closely follows the sample exam matrix previously announced by the Ministry of Education and Training.
In the Reading Comprehension section (3 points), the material is relatively familiar, the questions follow the level of recognition, understanding and closely follow the sample questions of the sample exam. Therefore, candidates can easily grasp the problem. In question 4 of the Reading Comprehension section, candidates are required to draw a lesson about lifestyle for themselves from the author's reflection in the poem "If we separate each drop of water from the unity of the ocean, we will only see small, lonely drops of water that gradually disappear" is a fairly open question. This type of question helps to exploit the candidate's viewpoints, attitudes, positions and thoughts.
In the Writing section (7 points), the social argumentation section requires stating the meaning of respecting individuality. This is a fairly familiar question for students, they have space to write and the knowledge to write. The test is also highly connected when the Social Argumentation section is linked to question 4 of the Reading Comprehension section.
As for the Literary Essay, according to Ms. Thanh, the work “Country” is the core lesson of the 2006 Literature program. The Literary Essay section has 2 parts, part 1 analyzes the poem, part 2 comments on the combination of Nguyen Khoa Diem’s emotions and thoughts expressed in the poem. Both parts are relatively close to students, and if they have a solid grasp of high school Literature knowledge, they will do well.
“In conclusion, the 2024 High School Graduation Literature exam is a good exam, it is not difficult for candidates to get high scores. However, this year's exam is longer than previous years.
Therefore, to complete the test well, students need to be able to cover and select knowledge and control the time spent on the test. Otherwise, they will lack time to write the art assessment or advanced comments, which will affect the overall result," Ms. Thanh commented.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Anh, a teacher at Tuyensinh247.com, said that the Literature exam closely followed the sample exam structure of the Ministry of Education and Training and still maintained the structure of the 2023 high school graduation exam, including 2 parts: Part I - Reading comprehension (3 points) and Part II - Writing (7 points). Average students can solve 5 - 6 points, good students can achieve 7 points, and 8.5 points or higher can more clearly classify excellent students.
Ms. Quynh Anh believes that the social argumentation question in the exam is not too difficult. Candidates just need to write within the correct amount of time, pay attention to emphasizing the meaning of respecting individuality, cite appropriate evidence, and have deep antitheses and connections.
The literary essay section is on the work "Dat Nuoc" (Country), the excerpt is at the beginning of the work. The supplementary question requires students to point out the thoughtfulness and emotion in Nguyen Khoa Diem's poetry expressed in the excerpt. It can be seen that the exam is close to reality and suitable for students, but at the same time still has a high level of classification.
"Thus, the exam can not only test and evaluate the general education students' abilities but can also be used for university admission purposes," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Anh.
The rate of 7, 8 points this year may be quite high.
Master Nguyen Ngoc Thuy Linh, a Literature teacher at Hoa Binh LaTrobe High School in Hanoi, also commented that the 2024 Literature exam has the same structure as the exam in recent years. However, question 1 is no longer a question about recognizing the usual method of expression/language style.
Part 1 includes 4 questions revolving around an argumentative text with 2 comprehension questions and 2 application questions; Part 2 includes 2 questions: 1 social argumentative paragraph question and 1 literary argumentative question about the work "Country" by Nguyen Khoa Diem.
According to Ms. Linh, the exam ensures that students are classified. The questions have 4 levels of cognition: the first 2 questions on reading comprehension ensure basic comprehension, the last 2 questions on reading comprehension have good classification. The social discussion issues are practical and familiar, but will be a challenge for students when it comes to practical and appropriate responses, expressing deep and sincere insights.
“In the Reading section, students can easily get 1.5 - 2 points. The social commentary section can mostly be in the range of 1 - 1.25 points. With the literary commentary section, if they learn enough knowledge, 2 - 2.5 points is not difficult. So the percentage of 7 and 8 points this year can be quite high,” Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thuy Linh assessed.
According to Ms. Linh, the test is done in 120 minutes, ensuring reasonableness and suitability, but requires students to control their time well to achieve good results. With this test, students with average to good academic performance can achieve 5.5 - 6.5 points, students with excellent academic performance can achieve 7 - 8 points or more.
