When summer vacation doesn't let... Vacation
For many people of the 8X and 9X generations, summer vacation is associated with days of wandering around catching cicadas, picking royal poincianas, playing hopscotch, skipping rope or wading in the river to catch fish. Summer at that time was truly a time to temporarily leave school to have fun, immerse yourself in nature, and experience true childhood. However, for many children today, summer vacation has turned into a "third semester".
Vo Tran Bao Truc (Hiep Hoa commune, Duc Hoa district, Long An province), who just finished 7th grade, shared: “Last summer I had exactly 2 weeks off, then my mother continued to register me for Math, Literature, and English. I hope this summer I can reduce my cultural studies to participate in sports , dancing and singing.”
Nguyen Khanh An, a 10th grader from Tan An City, said: “I want to spend this summer participating in experiential activities and practicing skills rather than taking extra classes. I always want summer vacation to be a time to truly rest and relax.”
Not only Bao Truc or Khanh An, many students have to “take summer vacation to go to school”. After the first week of rest, they continue to return to the machine with a dense extra-curricular schedule to prepare for the new school year. This inadvertently causes children to fall into a state of stress, even at risk of psychological and behavioral disorders.
Chess class at the Provincial Children's House increases the number of students during the summer
On the parents' side, many people are also aware of the importance of a relaxing summer. Ms. Thai Thi Thanh Ha (Ward 4, Tan An City) shared: “I have 2 grandchildren. Last week, after finishing their semester exams, I sent them back to their hometown to attend a memorial service so that they can be close to nature, experience life, and meet relatives. The 8th grader has a talent for singing, so I registered him for singing lessons. The 4th grader likes to play chess , so he will take chess lessons. In addition, the family plans to organize a summer trip for the children. As for summer school, if the children want to go to school, the family will let them go, not force them.” However, most parents face difficulties because while their children are on summer vacation, they still have to work all day, and cannot arrange time to look after their children, giving them a proper summer.
Create a meaningful summer with children
According to information from the Provincial Children's House, there are currently more than 20 types of gifted activities such as martial arts (Taekwondo, Karatedo, Vovinam, traditional martial arts), chess, children's dance, vocal music, musical instruments, drawing, robot assembly, etc. In the summer, the number of students increased sharply from 800 to 1,000-2,000. The Provincial Children's House also increased teaching hours to ensure the quality and needs of students.
Taekwondo coach Dang Dang Thanh Huy said: "During the summer, the number of students is disrupted because some students go back to their hometowns for summer vacation, while others are sent by their parents to attend physical training classes, so we also change the curriculum to make it more suitable, reduce pressure and increase fun, helping students to be excited about practicing."
Students are sent to martial arts classes by their parents during the summer.
Not only is it a place to learn more skills, talent classes and summer activities also help children connect with friends, increase physical activity and develop emotions. At the same time, many localities also organize volunteer activities to care for children in difficult circumstances. A typical example is the program "Happy Children's Day with children in border areas" organized by the Provincial Youth Union, the Provincial Youth Union in coordination with Group G9 - For Children's Smiles and Techhorizon Company, Vinh Hung District Youth Union in Thai Tri Commune, Vinh Hung District.
The program presented 100 gifts to 100 disadvantaged households in Thai Tri commune, presented 100 gifts to disadvantaged children ; presented 10 scholarships, 20 bicycles "accompanying border children to school"; organized recreational activities;... and implemented the youth project Security camera route with a total budget of more than 125 million VND, contributing to lighting up joy and hope for children in border areas.
Nguyen Thanh Phat (9 years old) received a bicycle at the program and said: “I am very happy to have a new bicycle to go to school. Before, I had to ask my parents to take me to school or go with friends. Now that I have a bicycle, I will try to go to school regularly and study well so as not to disappoint the teachers and uncles who gave me gifts.”
Tan An City currently has 14 primary schools, 9 secondary schools with more than 19,500 children and students; including more than 13,000 members of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers Team. Vice Chairman of Tan An City People's Committee - Nguyen Minh Sang emphasized that summer is a precious time for students to rest and have fun after a year of studying. To bring a safe and rewarding summer, the city issued a summer activity plan for 2025 with the theme: "Be happy, be safe, learn many good things, do many good things".
The city has been making efforts to materialize these policies and guidelines through summer activity plans and support programs such as organizing free swimming classes to prevent drowning; expanding life skills, digital skills, and self-defense classes; coordinating the organization of cultural, artistic, and sports activities, children's festivals, summer camps, and creative competitions; enhancing career guidance activities to help children have a clearer orientation for the future. In particular, Tan An City promotes activities to care for disadvantaged children and children in difficult areas, helping them have equal access to conditions for comprehensive development.
Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Chairman of the Provincial Youth Union Council - Pham Van Hau and benefactors presented bicycles and study corners to students in difficult circumstances in Thai Tri commune, Vinh Hung district.
With the goal of mobilizing society to implement the movement "All people care for, educate and protect children" and prioritize resources to support and help children, this summer, Tan An City People's Committee awarded 358 scholarships to disadvantaged students in the city, each worth 500,000 VND. At the program, Tan An City People's Committee awarded directly to 130 students and awarded 6 scholarships worth 5 million VND each to children orphaned by Covid-19.
Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, Chairman of the Provincial Youth Union Council - Pham Van Hau said: "Every year, the Provincial Youth Union and the Provincial Youth Union Council develop summer activity plans with rich and practical content, aiming at the needs of children for entertainment, training and comprehensive development.
In particular, we pay special attention to children in remote areas and children in difficult circumstances through programs such as awarding scholarships, giving gifts, organizing mobile playgrounds, summer camps, skill classes, etc. We identify that accompanying and caring for children is not only a responsibility but also a way to invest sustainably in the future of our province”./.
