From the familiar
To preserve, conserve and promote cultural identity, schools in the area encourage students to wear traditional costumes of their ethnic groups on some days of the week and at cultural and artistic events of the school and locality. For ethnic boarding schools, wearing traditional costumes has become a habit. Every Monday, each school is brilliant with brocade colors, patterns and styles of ethnic costumes.

In recent years, schools have organized many collective cultural activities for students to participate in, including traditional costume performances. The activities aim to educate students about pride and awareness of preserving traditional cultural identity. This is also an activity that Thanh Nua Secondary School, Dien Bien District has just organized, as part of the plan to build "Friendly School, Active Students".
Participating in the program, Luong Thi Kieu Nhu, class 9D1 shared: “My friends and I introduced to the whole school the Mong, Thai, and Kho Mu ethnic costumes for men and women. I am very proud to wear my traditional Thai ethnic costume, perform in front of teachers and friends, contributing to spreading the love of ethnic culture to everyone.”
Along with costumes, traditional and typical ethnic items and utensils often appear in schools. They are used in art performances, competitions, and school festivals, and are displayed to beautify cultural spaces during events. Especially in kindergartens, these items are familiar to each classroom, helping to decorate learning corners to be more diverse, attractive, and closer, and increasing interaction for students.

At Huoi So Kindergarten, Tua Chua district, baskets, jars, hoes, shovels... and musical instruments such as Mong flutes are all "miniatured", cute and lovely, becoming decorations for the study corners of the classroom and school, suitable for the age of preschool children.
Ms. Hoang Thi Thao, Principal of the school, said: “In Huoi So, there are two main ethnic groups: Mong and Dao. Each ethnic group has its own unique beauty. In order for children to understand and be proud of their ethnic traditions from a young age, teachers and parents personally make many household items, production tools, musical instruments, etc. of the ethnic groups to serve their studies. These items are made in the form of models, pictures, toys or miniature versions, from many different materials. The children like the most wooden and bamboo items that are exactly like the items that they and their families use every day, but are small, like a toy or gift. This helps them enjoy exploring and learning more.”
Promoting the beauty of national culture
At the Provincial Ethnic Minority High School, for many years now, the Folk Song - Folk Dance - Musical Instruments - Traditional Costumes Club has been a place to "connect" school students with community cultural activities. The club has about 100 students participating and has regular monthly activities, with different topics.

Having joined the club since entering the school, Lo Thi Thu Hoai has become much more confident in showing off her singing talent. Hoai confided: “I am very happy to join the club. Especially after stressful study hours, we can sit together to join in singing traditional songs. Not only do I learn more about the culture and performing arts of the Thai people, I also learn more about the traditional cultures of other ethnic groups.”
Each activity is created and carried out by the students themselves based on the guidance and management of the school, by collecting and learning lyrics, dances, and musical instruments; practicing songs, dances, and traditional folk performances of various ethnic groups...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue, Vice Principal of the Provincial Ethnic Minority High School, said: “By being regularly exposed to cultural activities, students will raise their awareness of preserving and appreciating the traditional beauty of the ethnic community in general. When love for national culture is nurtured, it will build people with more personality, awareness, and responsibility towards the community and the nation.”

Traditional songs and dances have also been spread throughout schools. Implementing the "Project to Preserve and Promote the Value of Folk Songs and Dances of Ethnic Minorities in Association with Tourism Development in the 2022-2030 Period in the Area" of the Provincial People's Committee, the Department of Education and Training has issued a document on organizing related activities for students in the area.
In which, the Department of Education and Training, secondary schools, high schools, Dien Bien Pedagogical College are required to proactively develop plans, select and organize training for students to master a type of collective performance to create a unique identity for each unit. Encourage schools to establish and develop folk art clubs, folk dances, folk music, street dances. Maintain regular activities at schools, associated with the organization of cultural, artistic, sports and other educational activities.

In addition to organizing extracurricular activities and exchanges, schools also actively implement local education content according to the new general education program; integrate into each subject; convey the preservation of national cultural traditions through the integration of subjects such as Literature, History, Geography, Civic Education, etc. associated with reality and experience of indigenous culture. Through these practical activities, schools not only contribute to preserving national cultural identity but also help students cultivate their personalities and develop comprehensively.
