Shocking proposal of Indonesian football

The upcoming 2025/26 Indonesian National Championship (Liga 1) season may allow each club to register up to 11 foreign players, a record number in Southeast Asian football history.

Bola said the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has just announced a major change plan for Liga 1 2025/26, when clubs will be allowed to register up to 11 foreign players, with a maximum of 8 players able to play in a match.

According to Mr. Ferry Paulus, a member of the executive board of the Indonesian National Championship, this plan aims to increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of football in the archipelago country.

In the 2024/25 season, Indonesian clubs will be allowed to register only eight foreign players, with a limit of six players playing each match. This increase is expected to attract more international talent, thereby improving the quality of play and bringing more dramatic matches.

Mr. Paulus emphasized that this change is a strategic step to bring Indonesian football closer to regional and international standards, while creating opportunities for local players to learn from their foreign counterparts.

The proposal by the Liga 1 organizing committee, if approved, will make Indonesia a rare league in Asia that allows the registration of a record number of foreign players.

In the Thai League, the 2024/2025 season allows each team to register 10 foreign players, including 3 non-Asian players, 3 Asian players and 4 Southeast Asian players, with a maximum of 8 players on the field.

This regulation helps the Thai League attract many stars from Japan, Korea and Europe, contributing to improving the quality of the tournament and the achievements of Thai teams in the AFC Champions League.

Meanwhile, Vietnam's V.League currently applies stricter regulations. The 2024/25 season allows teams to register 3 players and use all 3 on the field. Teams participating in the Asian Cup and Southeast Asian Cup are allowed to register 5 players in the V.League and use 3.

In Asia, only the Saudi Arabian Premier League allows each club to register 10 foreign players in its 25-man squad for the 2024/25 season. Of these, a maximum of eight foreign players will be allowed to play in each league match.

In addition, the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean national championships all limit the number of foreign players to 5 or 6.
