Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has begun a hiring spree for “product and design” positions in Beijing and Hangzhou, SCMP reported, fueling speculation about a new AI model that the company has so far kept completely under wraps.
In a recruitment notice posted on its official WeChat account on April 23 (local time), DeepSeek said it is looking for candidates who can build “next-generation smart product experiences” based on large language model (LLM) technology, the underlying technology behind generative AI services such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek’s own chatbot application of the same name.
For the first time since its founding, DeepSeek has announced job openings for product-related positions such as product management, product design, and visual design. Previously, the Hangzhou-based company focused mainly on researching foundational models in the field of AI.
The hiring spree is seen by analysts as a sign that DeepSeek is transitioning into a full-fledged business. In addition to product and design roles, the company is also hiring for a CFO and COO, along with four other research and engineering roles, according to DeepSeek’s career page.
Despite the widespread attention from the public and investors, DeepSeek has remained tight-lipped. Since its launch, it has limited its public interactions to a few product updates and academic research announcements. The company’s most recent LLM model upgrade was released nearly a month ago, when DeepSeek announced performance improvements to its open-source V3 model.
According to Reuters , DeepSeek may launch its new reasoning model R2 as early as next month. However, up to now, the company has not made any official announcement regarding the timing or progress of the release of this model.
DeepSeek began to attract global attention from late December 2024 to January 2025 with the consecutive releases of two advanced open-source AI models, V3 and R1. Both models were developed at a fraction of the cost and computational requirements of what large tech companies require for LLM projects. DeepSeek’s series of announcements sent shockwaves through both Wall Street and Silicon Valley.
Soon after, a series of technology companies in China quickly developed products based on DeepSeek's open source models, especially R1 - the model announced in January.
Last month, Lee Kai-fu, founder and CEO of 01.AI, said his company is leveraging DeepSeek’s technology to provide AI solutions to enterprise clients, particularly in the finance, gaming and legal industries. 01.AI has also stopped developing its own AI models.
Now, researchers, investors, and the general public are closely watching how DeepSeek continues to make breakthroughs amid a tightening U.S. ban on exporting Nvidia's advanced AI chips to China.
Last week, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng during a visit to China, according to the Financial Times . However, neither Nvidia nor DeepSeek confirmed whether the meeting actually took place.
