The Time-Train with Wheels

Hanoi is leading the way in developing nighttime tourism products. These tourism products are being increasingly refined and expanded, contributing to the creation of a connected system of nighttime entertainment venues for tourists. In August 2024, Ngoc Island - Truc Bach in Ba Dinh district was recognized by Hanoi as a city-level tourist destination.

"Truc Bach Night" is considered one of the new and unique night tourism products, offering experiences that are both vibrant, exciting, novel, and yet familiar to domestic and international tourists.

The highlight of "Truc Bach Night" is that the entire event space is designed to evoke the atmosphere of the subsidy period. For the first time in Hanoi, the entire event space is set up like a film set with a real street scene, complete with tram cars, department stores, etc., allowing visitors to relive the memories of one of the country's most significant periods.

Besides the specially designed stalls showcasing the subsidy era with various themes, the heart of the entire program is the No. 6 tram line – the “Hanoi Street Museum”. On the occasion of the Hanoi Tourism Department's promotion of Hanoi night tourism 2024, Ba Dinh district launched the No. 6 tram line tourism product with its first four carriages.

Each carriage will feature a distinctive culinary theme of Hanoi and Vietnam, such as rice, pho, vermicelli, noodles, kitchen, cupboard, and tray… The carriages form a train carrying heritage, a "mini-museum" of culture and cuisine, a noteworthy highlight for tourists who want to reminisce about the past and learn about the history and culture of the country.

During the "Truc Bach Night" event series, a large number of locals and international tourists came to visit and experience the atmosphere. Interestingly, the setting reminiscent of the subsidy period not only attracted older people to reminisce about the past, but also drew many young people to learn about the lives of Hanoians in the past.

Dressed in vintage-style attire, Nguyen Thuy Lien (Hoan Kiem District) excitedly shared: “When I learned about the Truc Bach Night event, I was very curious and invited my friends to come here to experience it and take pictures. The exhibition space and experiential activities here truly made me very happy and satisfied. Above all, this is also an opportunity for us young people to better understand the lives of our grandparents and parents in the past and to appreciate what our generation enjoys today.”

" Hanoi Street Museum "

This is the first time Hanoi has a "museum" that vividly recreates the streets, spaces, and culture of the subsidy period, displayed on the streets. Unlike typical museums where visitors learn about history and products displayed in a fixed space, at the "Hanoi Street Museum," visitors can explore and experience the street life of Hanoians with familiar artifacts such as century-old electric poles, public water pumps, neighborhood bulletin boards, means of transportation used by Hanoians, and street-based economic activities... through unique artistic activities, enjoying rich cuisine and stories steeped in Hanoi's culture, and experiencing the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of interactive live performances.

The series of interactive community experiences – Cultural Harmony – is an integral part of the “Truc Bach Night” event, part of the Metro Line 6 project – “Hanoi Street Museum”. Specifically, these include experiential shows such as: “The Flow of Pho”, “The Aroma of Green Rice”, “The Ancient Flavors of Tea”, “Memories of Cuisine during the Subsidy Period”, “Vietnamese Phin”, the interactive live performance “Stories of the Street during the Subsidy Period”, and a music and food festival featuring beer from the subsidy period…

Sharing insights into the conceptualization and implementation of the Metro Line 6 project, Chairman of Truc Bach Ward People's Committee Nguyen Dan Huy said: “When we started the project, we wanted the carriages to be miniature museums containing stories about culinary culture. After the first carriage's trial run received widespread support and enthusiasm from residents and tourists, we realized we needed to expand further. Each carriage not only conveys stories about cuisine but also recreates the culture, occupations, lifestyles, and behaviors of the people of Thang An - Hanoi. Metro Line 6 - the “Hanoi Street Museum” - is an open museum, a “living” museum, and a community museum that will always be evolving and changing so that visitors can not only see but also directly participate in experiential activities, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of Hanoi's culture and people.”

With the romantic and picturesque scenery of Truc Bach Lake, the event creates an ideal relaxing space for visitors to immerse themselves in and admire the beauty of the natural landscape. It can be said that the No. 6 tram line – the "Hanoi Street Museum" – is a unique tourism product of Ba Dinh district.

This has contributed to the development of an additional 145 businesses in the area. Revenue from these businesses has increased by 245% compared to before, demonstrating the positive socio-economic development benefits of the area.

According to representatives of the Ba Dinh District People's Committee, to further enhance the attractiveness for tourists and create a distinctive space for the Ngoc Island - Ngu Xa area, it is expected that in the first quarter of 2025, Ba Dinh district will continue to invest in paving the road surface of Nguyen Khac Hieu Street, Ngu Xa section belonging to the night food street, aiming to provide tourists with enjoyable experiences in the future.

The "Tram Line 6" project, part of the "Leng Keng Heritage" project, is a unique initiative aimed at restoring the old tram line into a space for displaying and experiencing Hanoi's culture and culinary heritage.

The planned Metro Line 6 project will have 8 carriages. After the official operation of 4 carriages at the launch ceremony of the Metro Line 6 tourism product, Truc Bach ward will deploy the remaining carriages in 2025. The project not only revives traditional values and the cultural beauty of Hanoi but also contributes to the preservation and promotion of heritage values.

In addition to developing unique tourism products in Hanoi, the team behind the "Leng Keng Heritage" project also carries out the charitable project "Leng Keng to School." The project aims to revitalize the lives of bicycles that are still in good condition but no longer in use. These bicycles are repainted and decorated by artists and then donated to children in mountainous regions, making their journey to school shorter and happier.
