A lake spanning over 300 hectares, dug by locals centuries ago to store water for daily life and agricultural production, is a unique scenic spot in Tra Vinh.
Ao Ba Om, located in Hamlet 3, Ward 8, Tra Vinh City (Tra Vinh Province), is a rectangular pond measuring 500m long and 300m wide. It was recognized as a national-level scenic site in 1994. Locals commonly refer to it as the "square pond" because its shape gives the impression that the lengths of the banks are equal. The pond itself covers an area of approximately 100 hectares, reaches a depth of about 2 meters during the rainy season, and has a water storage capacity of about 2 million cubic meters. Ao Ba Om is located about 7km from the center of Tra Vinh city, along National Highway 53 to the southwest.
The Ba Om Pond scenic area consists of three parts: the water surface area, the pond banks, and the Dipterocarpus forest, surrounded by many ancient Dipterocarpus trees. The pond is usually calm because there is no water flow, and it is rarely affected by strong winds due to the surrounding ancient trees that provide shelter. Depending on the season, the pond's surface will be clear blue or slightly yellowish with moss. According to records from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Tra Vinh province, Ba Om pond was dug by local people centuries ago to store water for daily life and agricultural production. The sparse primary forest surrounding the area has been preserved intact. Over time, due to the impact and erosion of rain and wind, the roots of many ancient, pristine trees here have been exposed, forming strange and unique shapes.
There are currently about 500 ancient Dipterocarpus trees here, some hundreds of years old. Every morning, visitors take a stroll, exercise, or sit and chat, enjoying the cool air under the shade of the trees. The ancient star trees and oil trees surrounding the pond are numbered for easy management. Ao Ba Om is a unique natural scenic spot in Tra Vinh province in particular, and in the Southwestern region of Vietnam in general, becoming a destination that attracts thousands of tourists from all over the country every year. With its cool, spacious green surroundings, Ba Om Pond is also chosen by many as a place for outdoor learning, research, experiencing the lake's natural environment, camping, and more.
