According to data from Box Office Vietnam, "Finding the Body: Headless Ghost" topped the box office charts last week. Over the three-day weekend, director Hai Bui's film grossed over 21 billion VND, with approximately 250,000 tickets sold. On average, each screening sold around 32 tickets.
Including special screenings, the film's revenue as of the evening of April 20th reached 29 billion VND - an opening weekend that wasn't explosive but is still quite impressive for a Vietnamese horror film.
Following its initial screenings, the film received mixed reviews regarding its quality. The script was criticized for being weak, and the comedic and horror elements were deemed unimpressive. While the film's concept was inspired by a real-life case and aimed to incorporate a humanistic message – a commendable effort – the director's storytelling inadvertently distorted these messages for the audience. The film was criticized for its tendency to glorify the perpetrator and blame the victim instead.
However, "Finding the Body: The Headless Ghost" still achieved good revenue thanks to the appearance of a cast with familiar faces such as Hong Van, Tien Luat, Dai Nghia… In addition, the team also boosted promotion, along with cinetour campaigns that attracted the attention of the audience.

"Finding the Body: The Headless Ghost" dethrones "The Underground Tunnel".
Back at the box office, "The Tunnel" dropped to second place last week. Bui Thac Chuyen's brainchild raked in 11 billion VND, bringing its total revenue to 150 billion VND. This is an unprecedented achievement for a war/historical film in Vietnamese cinema.
Currently, the film's box office revenue has slowed significantly, despite maintaining around 1,500-2,000 screenings per day. Given the current box office situation, it's unlikely the film will reach the 200 billion VND mark.
In addition, the international films released last week, such as "Bribery at the Bottom of the Lake," "Kappa: The Evil Spirit at the Bottom of the Lake," and "Mother and Child," all performed poorly. The lack of appeal from foreign films gave the two Vietnamese films, " The Tunnel" and " Finding the Body: The Headless Ghost ," more time to increase their revenue before the two "blockbusters," " Flip Face 8 " (Ly Hai) and "Detective Kien" (Victor Vu), officially premiered during the April 30th - May 1st holiday.
