The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management ( Ministry of Health ) has issued an urgent dispatch to medical examination and treatment facilities under the Ministry; health departments of ministries and sectors; and health departments of provinces and centrally-administered cities regarding the proactive implementation of measures to prevent and control Ebola virus disease in the face of the risk of outbreak.

Previously, on May 17, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern.

According to the Ministry of Health, Ebola virus disease is primarily transmitted through direct contact with the blood, tissues, and bodily fluids of infected animals or people; it can also be transmitted through contaminated objects such as clothing, bedding, and used needles. The virus can also be transmitted from person to person through direct contact with damaged skin or mucous membranes when in contact with blood and bodily fluids such as secretions, feces, urine, saliva, and semen of infected individuals.

Given the risk of Ebola virus disease entering Vietnam, the Ministry of Health has requested all health units to urgently implement comprehensive disease prevention and control measures within their jurisdiction. Simultaneously, they are to strengthen surveillance, especially for individuals with a history of travel to or return from countries or regions currently reporting outbreaks within the past 21 days.

Healthcare facilities must strictly implement infection control measures, ensuring full compliance with protective protocols, screening, classification, and strict isolation of suspected or confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease within the healthcare facility.

The Ministry of Health also requested that units regularly update information on the global pandemic situation, proactively communicate to provide accurate and timely information, and avoid causing panic in the community. In addition, they should guide people to properly implement preventive measures as recommended.

In particular, healthcare facilities need to improve their capacity to detect suspected cases early in order to promptly isolate them, coordinate with the preventive health system in testing, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemic control in accordance with the professional guidelines of the Ministry of Health.

The review and preparation of adequate personal protective equipment for medical staff, ensuring isolation conditions, as well as diagnostic and treatment capabilities, were emphasized to ensure readiness to effectively receive and manage suspected or confirmed cases. The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management requested that all units seriously implement these measures, contributing to proactively controlling the risk of disease outbreaks and protecting public health.

According to the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health), Ebola virus disease is an acute and particularly dangerous infectious disease in humans, usually manifesting as hemorrhagic syndrome and multiple organ failure, with a mortality rate that can reach up to 90%.
