University benchmark scores fluctuate when floor scores decrease?

Admissions experts advise candidates not to confuse the floor score and the standard score.

Adjusting wishes should be based on the predicted standard scores of each major and each school.

The floor scores (also known as the threshold for ensuring input quality) of universities have been on a downward trend in recent days. Even the floor score for admission to health majors with a practice certificate as prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has decreased by 2 points compared to 2024. This reality raises many questions for candidates and parents: Will the benchmark score decrease accordingly? And how do these changes affect the chances of admission?

Flexible adjustment

The minimum score is the score that candidates must achieve to register for admission. Each school with its own characteristics will have appropriate minimum score regulations.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, the minimum score for the 2025 high school graduation exam is 16 points, common for all majors instead of many minimum scores like last year. MSc. Pham Thai Son, Director of the Center for Admissions and Communications, said that for the high school graduation exam score, the minimum score for technology and engineering majors remains at 16. Meanwhile, the minimum score for some majors in the fields of management, economics , services, law, information technology, and languages has decreased by 1-4 points compared to last year. The reason is that the high school graduation exam scores of candidates have decreased significantly, especially math and English - 2 subjects in most of the school's admission combinations. Similarly, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, this year's minimum score for all majors is 16 (except for the health major), down 1 point compared to last year.

In Ho Chi Minh City, many other universities also announced their floor scores with a decrease compared to last year, while some schools kept their floor scores stable, such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics or International University...

According to MSc. Nguyen Thi Kim Phung, Deputy Head of the Admissions - Communications and Corporate Relations Department, University of Finance - Marketing, there are many reasons why the admission floor scores of schools tend to decrease this year. First of all, there is the adjustment in the score range of the 2025 high school graduation exam - many subjects have a slight decrease in average scores, especially in combinations using math, English or both. Schools want to ensure the number of qualified candidates to apply, so they have proactively lowered the floor scores to widen the "entrance door". In addition, the number of candidates registering for admission in 2025 is quite stable compared to the previous year, while many universities still have to maintain or increase enrollment targets. This forces schools, especially non-public schools, to be more flexible in setting floor scores to ensure admission rates.

In addition, current admission is not only based on high school exam results but also on many other methods such as reviewing academic records, assessing capacity... Therefore, the decrease in the floor score also reflects the dispersion of admission sources among methods.

Choose the right wish

Although the minimum score has decreased, this does not mean that the benchmark score will also decrease accordingly. The benchmark score depends on the number of applications for the major/school, the quality of the candidates' applications and the enrollment quota. For "hot" majors such as information technology, marketing, logistics..., the benchmark score is likely to remain the same or decrease slightly if many candidates choose it as their first choice.

However, in less popular majors or schools with low competition, lowering the minimum score can lead to lower benchmark scores. This is also an opportunity for candidates with average scores to take advantage of the "entrance" if they know how to choose their preferences appropriately.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics said that it has received a large number of applications at both its Ho Chi Minh City campus and its Vinh Long branch. At the Ho Chi Minh City campus, 70% of the applications are from candidates with excellent academic performance or higher, or are students of specialized schools, excellent students at the provincial/city level, 40% have international English certificates equivalent to IELTS from 6.0 or TOEFL iBT from 73 points or higher, or have provincial/city excellent student awards. At Vinh Long , 50% of the applications are from candidates with excellent academic performance or higher, or are students of specialized schools, excellent students at the provincial/city level, 20% have international English certificates equivalent to IELTS from 6.0 or TOEFL iBT from 73 points or higher, or have provincial/city excellent student awards. Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, with the current application situation, predicts that the benchmark score will tend to fluctuate up/down within 1.0 points depending on the training program.

According to MSc. Phung Quan (University of Natural Sciences - VNU-HCM), in 2025, except for the direct admission method, the remaining methods will all be converted to a common score for admission, leading to the possibility of adjusting the admission score in many majors. It is expected that for majors with a benchmark score of 28 or higher in previous years, the benchmark score this year may decrease slightly, but not significantly. Majors with a benchmark score below 28 will tend to decrease sharply, commonly from 1 to 2 points, applied to most combinations such as A00, A01, B00, D01. Specifically, the combination A00, A01, B00 is expected to decrease by 1.5 - 2 points in many majors, especially the engineering, technology, and medicine groups. The D01 combination may decrease more slightly, about 0.5 - 1.5 points, but majors such as economics, languages, and law will still maintain their competitiveness if the quota does not increase. The above "hot" majors can still maintain high scores thanks to combined admission methods and other priorities. Other majors will be clearly affected, with benchmark scores likely to drop sharply this year.

Master Tran Le Trong Phuc - Deputy Head of Training Management Department, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, said that this year's low exam scores will affect the admission scores, especially for majors that include math and English. At the university, the admission scores for majors in the economic and technical groups may be lower than last year. Master Ngo Thi Xuan, Deputy Head of Admissions and Communications Department, Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, also said that this year's admission scores may decrease by 1-3 points.

Online consultation: "Adjust your wishes to avoid being unfairly rejected"

At 2:00 p.m. on July 24, Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper organized an online consultation program with the topic: "Adjusting wishes to avoid unfair failure", to support candidates in the final stage of adjusting and supplementing wishes for university admission in 2025.

The program took place just a few days before the Ministry of Education and Training's application registration system officially closed (5 p.m. on July 28). This is an important and decisive moment for candidates in choosing the right major and school that suits their abilities and personal aspirations.

Attending the program were representatives from 5 prestigious universities in Ho Chi Minh City, including: Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, University of Finance - Marketing, Van Hien University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages - Information Technology, Nguyen Tat Thanh University. Representatives of the schools will directly answer questions, share experiences in choosing wishes wisely and effectively, helping candidates avoid the situation of "unfairly failing" despite high scores.

Through the talk show, the program not only provides accurate and up-to-date information on enrollment but also serves as a bridge for parents and students to understand the trends in choosing majors and human resource needs, thereby making strategic decisions. The program is broadcast online at nld.com.vn; livestreams on the digital platforms of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper.
