As he was wheeling his motorbike out of the alley onto National Highway 14G to take his child to school, Mr. Minh from Jơ Ngây commune (Dong Giang district) had to proactively back away when he saw a heavy truck carrying construction materials heading from Da Nang towards Prao town. He said that the road was too narrow, and if he didn't yield, a collision would easily occur.
"Over the years, people have repeatedly petitioned the authorities to consider expanding National Highway 14G to facilitate easier trade and safer travel for the public. However, to this day, this legitimate request has not been resolved," said Minh.
Observations on National Highway 14G reveal that the road surface is both degraded and narrow, making it insufficient for two trucks to pass simultaneously. Many sections of the route are winding, with steep inclines and declines, obstructing visibility and posing a high risk of accidents. The asphalt penetration section from Jơ Ngây commune to A Ting, and from Tà Lu to Prao town, is degraded and damaged, making it difficult for drivers.
A retired official shared that the current state of National Highway 14G will significantly impact investment attraction in Dong Giang, including the neighboring Tay Giang district. This is because, for industrial or tourism development, specialized vehicles used by investors must be able to travel smoothly and safely.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Tuan, Deputy Head of the Economic and Infrastructure Department of Dong Giang District, National Highway 14G is 66km long, connecting Hoa Vang District (Da Nang City) with Dong Giang District, of which the section through Dong Giang is 41km long.
According to the plan, National Highway 14G is to be a Class IV road with 2 lanes and a cross-section width of 7.5m. However, the current road surface is only 4-5m wide in many places. Recently, the Vietnam Road Administration has only invested in 4 bridges to eliminate dangerous culverts during the rainy season and upgraded 5km of the road surface. The remaining 36km have not been upgraded or widened according to the plan, and many sections are severely degraded.
Local voters have repeatedly complained about the serious deterioration of National Highway 14G, causing traffic safety hazards and affecting people's travel and socio-economic development in Dong Giang and Tay Giang districts.
The Dong Giang District government has requested that the competent authorities promptly approve the adjustment and addition of connection points to National Highway 14G (97 locations) so that the district can invest in the construction of transportation routes to implement national target programs and promote socio-economic development. In addition, the province is requested to invest in a system of access roads to facilitate the relocation of residents to new settlements, thereby stabilizing their lives.
