Cunha played aggressively in the first minutes. |
This is only the second time in the last 11 seasons that Man Utd have failed to win their opening two games, the last time being in 2022/23 under Erik ten Hag.
That doesn't mean much right now, but it certainly puts pressure on the home game against Burnley on August 30. They simply have to win at all costs, especially with two big games against Manchester City and Chelsea following that.
However, Ruben Amorim did not appear worried. The Portuguese coach affirmed: "I think we can do better, but we are working hard, that is the most important thing for me. I think at some points we played well, especially at the beginning of the game."
There was some truth to what Amorim said. United started the game strongly and could have scored a couple of early goals, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount combining well with one-touch passes to create scoring opportunities.
It was a blistering start that could easily have gone United’s way, and had Fernandes not missed a first-half penalty, it looked as though the visitors could have raced to victory. Four of those chances came in the opening 15 minutes.
MU still has no win in the Premier League season 2025/26. |
This was encouraging for Man Utd fans, as their first 30 minutes were sharp, powerful and engaging. At the same time, it also showed that Man Utd were starting to shake off their inherent slow habits.
According to statistics from the start of last season, Genoa (30) are the only team in Europe's big five leagues to fail to score in the first half in more games than Man Utd (29). Judging by the opening performance at Craven Cottage, that statistic will soon change.
In fact, if there is such a start in the home game against Burnley next weekend, it is very likely that Man Utd's first goal of the season will come. Coach Amorim may just need a "spark" to light up the whole team.
