Zhang Yiwen (born in 2007) comes from an intellectual family in Henan Province, China. Both her parents are government officials working in the education sector. From a young age, her parents invested heavily in her education.
Thanks to her parents' support, she learned to read at the young age of four. When it was time for her to go to school, Zhang Yiwen's father felt that the school curriculum didn't develop his daughter's abilities and was a waste of time and money. He decided to educate her himself by opening a private school and building a "prodigy education" model.
"The 'product' of the 'forced maturation of prodigies' education model"
Every day, Zhang Yiwen wakes up at 5 am to study. After lunch, she rests for an hour before starting her afternoon classes. Her studies end at 10 pm. With such intense studying, Zhang Yiwen completed elementary, middle, and high school in just five years.
At the time, many people thought she was smarter than her peers but not a prodigy. However, her parents placed too much expectation on her. Her father, Zhang Mintao, even said that his daughter would pass the university entrance exam at age 10 and earn her doctorate by age 20.

As expected by her parents, at the age of 9, Zhang Yiwen took the college entrance exam. Although she studied science subjects, she neglected social sciences like history and geography, resulting in a score of only 172 out of 750 points. This score was insufficient to be admitted to a college in Henan Province.
Undeterred, Mr. Zhang Mintao sent his daughter to a tutoring center to retake the exam the following year. In 2017, she took the university entrance exam for the second time and scored 352 out of 750 points. Zhang Yiwen had just enough points to be admitted to Shangqiu Institute of Technology, majoring in Electronic Information Technology.
Upon hearing the news that Zhang Yiwen passed the university entrance exam at the young age of 10, some people suggested that if she had studied and developed in a normal environment, she might have been admitted to a more prestigious university.
Besides admiration, many people consider Zhang Yiwen a "prematurely developed prodigy." She wasn't originally a prodigy; this result is a "product" of her parents' forced upbringing and ambitious expectations.
They criticized the parents' extreme parenting style, which could cause Zhang Yiwen to lose life skills and fall into a state of crisis in the future.
"Child prodigy" graduates from university, but companies refuse to hire him.
Upon entering university, Zhang Yiwen was different both physically and mentally. As a result, her life was completely turned upside down. The age difference meant she had no close friends during her university years and was constantly alone.
The biggest challenge Zhang Yiwen faced was a significant gap in her knowledge. Even in her third year of university, her professors suggested she drop out because her abilities couldn't keep up. Undeterred, she persevered and completed her studies. In July 2020, Zhang Yiwen officially graduated.
Having graduated from university at the age of 13, Zhang Yiwen was unable to join companies because she was not yet of legal working age. Following her parents' plan, after graduation she was to pursue a master's degree, but the computer-related major required entrance exams in Math and English. Zhang Yiwen was weak in these two subjects and therefore could not pass the postgraduate entrance exam.
With no other options, Zhang Yiwen returned to her family's private school, taking on a teaching assistant job with a salary of 2,000 RMB/month (6.5 million VND). Her daily tasks included helping her mother correct students' homework and organizing and handling various related tasks.
Speaking about his daughter's job, Mr. Zhang Mintao said that if Zhang Yiwen didn't arrive at school on time or wasn't serious in class, her salary would be deducted, leaving her with only 1,000 RMB per month (approximately 3.3 million VND).
Zhang Yiwen's father shared that he plans for his daughter to gain experience as a teaching assistant for about two years. After that, she can continue to take the master's degree entrance exam or find a job in her field of study.
Every time this story is mentioned, Zhang Yiwen's parents receive a lot of criticism for forcing their child to become a prodigy from an early age.
Now, at age 16, Zhang Yiwen is entering adolescence, her personality changing and becoming more rebellious. She has started expressing her own opinions, sometimes contrary to those of her parents.
To date, many believe that Zhang Yiwen's future is quite uncertain. She is considered a "product" of the "prematurely gifted" education model, lacking many life skills and knowledge, and therefore faces many difficulties in competing in society.
