According to the announcement from market research company Counterpoint Research , Apple's mobile phone sales in China last May were at a record high. In the last 60 consecutive days, the company grew by 15% compared to the same period last year. This is also the best performance that Apple has achieved in the past 3 years.
Analysts say that after a long period of decline, the Chinese market has helped Apple return. This success comes thanks to the company's unprecedented price reduction policy.
The company has had a difficult time in China. Competition from local brands, especially the return of Huawei, has caused iPhone sales to decline. At one point, Apple was knocked out of the top five best-selling mobile phone manufacturers in the country of a billion people.
Data from the company’s financial report shows a decline in the last two years. In 2024, the company earned $66.9 billion in China, down 7.73% year-on-year. Among Apple’s major markets, the country of a billion people was the only region to decline over the same period. This trend continued into early 2025, with further declines in the first quarter.
On forums in China, the iPhone is constantly criticized. Chinese users rate Apple products as lacking innovation and high prices... This trend resonates with the movement to support domestic products amid the US-China trade war, causing Apple to suffer.
The situation forced the company to adjust, continuously applying deep discount programs to stimulate demand. In May, Chinese e-commerce platforms reduced the price by up to 2,530 yuan (8.5 million VND) for the iPhone 16 series. Some retail channels also set a floor price for the 128 GB iPhone 16 Pro to take advantage of the government's nationwide subsidy policy. The aforementioned flagship line was sold at 5,500 yuan (20 million VND), quickly creating a shopping fever and selling out.
Compared to its competitors, Apple sells iPhones at a much higher average price. The company has plenty of room to adjust when purchasing power decreases and sales need to increase. However, this is not a long-term solution. Reducing iPhone prices a few months after launch will disadvantage early buyers and affect the secondary market. In addition, sales during the initial sale may decrease as customers wait.
