A rare story in the regional football world has just happened in Cambodia. When the Football Federation of this country decided to appoint Mr. Koji Gyotoku to lead the women's football team to participate in the 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship.

It is worth mentioning that Mr. Koji Gyotoku is currently the head coach of the men's national team and a series of youth teams of Cambodia.

According to the Cambodian Thmey Daily , the Japanese strategist will join the Cambodian women's team in the tournament taking place in Vietnam from August 6 to 19.

This decision helped Mr. Koji set an unprecedented record, becoming the coach who led the most teams at all levels in the history of Cambodian football.

Strategist Koji Gyotoku has been involved with Cambodian football since 2019 as a coach of the U15, U18 and U20 youth teams. His biggest mark was when he led the Cambodian U20 team to the 2020 AFC U20 Championship finals for the first time in history. However, the tournament was later canceled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2024, he continued to be entrusted with the U16 and U20 youth teams. Under his leadership, the Cambodian U16 team had an undefeated record in the group stage of the U16 Southeast Asian Championship, and the U20 team also participated in the U20 Asian qualifiers.

In September 2024, Mr. Gyotoku was officially appointed as head coach of the Cambodian men's national team and had his first international matches before leading the team at the 2024 ASEAN Cup.

Entering 2025, his workload becomes even more "terrifying" when he is assigned to lead the Cambodian U23 team to participate in 3 important tournaments: the Southeast Asian U23 Championship (July), the Asian U23 qualifiers (September) and the SEA Games in Thailand at the end of the year.

When two of the three major tasks with the U23 team had yet to take place, Mr. Koji continued to take on the additional responsibility of leading the national women's team.

Thus, up to now, the Japanese coach has been leading all levels of the Cambodian men's team including: U16, U18, U20, U23, the national team and now the women's national team.

It is worth mentioning that the fact that a male national team coach also leads the female team is a rare thing in world football.

At the 2025 AFF Women's Championship, the Cambodian women's team is in Group A with Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. This is considered a difficult group for them as the opponents are all at a higher level.
